...by strapping it around the front shock in the area below the shock spring and above the paralever arm??

That sounds like a rather bad idea to me. You'd be adding unsprung weight, and the horn has the potential to slide down the shock and foul the suspension, which could make for very unusual handling.
Some people have removed the carbon-canister and mounted a Stebel horn in it's place.

Don,
I know you've done that, but I don't want to as a "just-in-case" on future warranty claims. Do you have any other thoughts on possible mounting locations?

I'm hesitant to make any engine mods, i.e., removing the canister. What would I gain by doing so, other than a big place to mount a Stebel?

You wouldn't gain anything, except the mounting space you're looking for.
You would lose:
1. A tiny contribution to air pollution due to the evaporative emissions the canister helps control.
2. There is a chance that, if you had an engine problem, BMW could say, "Aha! You removed the canister. You're not covered by the warranty."
Yes, I know Magnuson-Moss says a company can't deny warranty coverage if the owner made a modification in a part of the product unrelated to the failure. But how do you define "unrelated"? My legal budget isn't large enough to find out, and I don't have enough confidence in BMW reliability to take the chance.

Has anyone posted instructions for removing the canister and mounting the horn?
