Question of worth

Hello all.
The local motorrad superstore here has an non-ABS R1150R (22,000 kms) that they bought off of another dealer that the selling dealer said had some scrapes. The scrapes turn out to be a heavily damaged tank, left cylinder cover, left pegs, left hand controls (brake lever sheared off) and both left side turn indicators, with some scratches here and there.
The asking price is €3.500~$5,150.
I can/will do all the work, save for the painting of the tank. Not looking to flip the bike just ride and enjoy until I rotate back to the US. Unless anyone has an 1150 they'll ship to Germany for similar cash
What say the collective?

You don't mention how long is the tour, on the other hand it appears that you are handy and can get things repaired. Here is how I see it.
Shipping a bike from the US for that money will be dificult, then there is the time element, paperwork and potential issues with the environment, to the extent that you might have to ship it back to the US at the end of the tour.
The bike you are referring to, doesn't seem to have a great deal of damage, mostly cosmetic......the cost of parts and the time to repair is also a question. I would venture to say that parts in the US (new and used) are less expensive but then there is the shipping. Of course, I'm assuming that the engine and frame are OK.
Last but not least, I know that US military in some of this countries have a vehicle pool available to them....let me explain. They are local vehicles that those on a tour buy for thie use and at the end of the tour they sell them to new arrivals. It is my belief that most of the vehicles are well kept. They might not have a BMW but others might be available.
It might be worthwhile for you to check on all of the above to see which one fits your needs the best. Best os luck.

Don't plan on bringing it back with you. I think I was reading on another board that it's pretty much impossible to bring a new-ish Euro-spec bike back to the USA. If that's your plan, make sure you do the research and make sure it's possible.
You're probably the best judge on price, as you know what's available locally at what price. I don't think we have very many members that I know of in Germany. My guess, without knowing too much about it but having just visited the UK on vacation, is that it's probably not the price of the bike that's a problem, it's the weakness of the US dollar.

I wouldn't pay $5100 for that bike with the damage you mention. (unless you aren't worried about cosmetics). A heavily damaged tank cannot be repaired to look like new without great effort and expense. (do not ask me how I know this!) Now, I don't know how prices are for new parts in Germany, but a new, unpainted tank is over $1000 here in the U S. A painted one is over $1500. All those smaller bits are very expensive also (here in the U S anyway) If parts prices over there are in line with prices here, I'll bet you'll have to spend over $2000 to repair that bike. In the U S, a nice (undamaged)R1150R can be had for between $5000 and $7000. YMMV

Thanks for the advice. The dealer will throw in a used tank, color unknown, that is the only part that I think would run more than a few hundred bucks. Although a dozen parts at $85 is over $1000!
The "pool" of bikes over here is dozens of HDs, some sport bikes very few BMWs.
Maybe Military Sales for an Alpine White 1200R

Oh and the damage is on the right side not the left... brake lever is on the right correct? I'd better find out before my next ride
