Being new to the whole auxilary input charging system on the '04.......

Is it possible to "Jump Start" the bike through the Aux plug?

Despite a fairly new battery (15 months) and religious home use of an OEM trickle charger, the Rockster was dead as a door nail this morning at work after being parked for 24 hours (not on the charger). Life goes on, but it raises some remedial questions that I should have had the answers to before the bike was found DOA. I would like to leave the charger at home and buy an additional battery tender adapter to take to work (The one with the male input into the bike and the wierd split prong male/female on the other end. This piece is designed to be used with a charger but I am wondering if it can be used with the alligator clipped piece that is used to go directly to a standard large battery. I have a commercial battery charger at work and am curious to know if there a way to start and or charge the bike using the Aux input with no trickle charger? If not, it's back to the jump plugs......Thanks!

On the left side of your '04 is a cover marked with a +. It's next to the aux. plug. Connect the positive alligator clip from your "jump" or charger, to this connector and the ground (neg.) to the stud located on the left cylinder head about half way down.[ Do not use the aux. input to jump the bike. ] This connection is a high current one that goes directly to your starter motor. The stud on the cylinder is a solid ground point 'cause most everything else is painted.

What battery were you using that took a dive after 15 months? Just curious as I will be buying a battery soon. Thanks

No such luck on the jump start lug. From what I have been reading, they were put on mid-year, and it would appear my bike was produced prior to that.

From what I have found, the positive jump cable can be hooked directly up to the positive lead on the starter. If this battery doesn't charge today, I might have to go that route to get it home / A&S BMW. I put the trickle charger on this morning and it immediately indicated that the battery was at 80%, which can't be good.......

Hiker, I haven't pulled the tank yet and don't know what battery is in there now. I'll let you know when I yank it.

Anyone have experience and or advice regarding a direct starter jump and or adding the jumpstart lug, after market? ( :

Worst comes, I go get a new battery and yank the tank and hope that is the problem or finally use that tow part of the insurance......

The parts to add the aux. stud for jumping are available from BMW and not expensive. You can jump your bike by removing the plastic cover over the starter and hooking the positive lead directly to it. Find a bare bolt head somewhere for the ground.
