Hey there,

Recently posted about my bike, which was leaving me stranded (failing to start). Took it to the dealer and turned out to be a defective battery. Bike has been riding well since, but a new problem is cropping up.

Occasionally if I blip the throttle right after starting the bike stalls out. It sometimes seems like the idle is shaky... hard to describe, almost as if it's not getting enough fuel, or maybe the other extreme, like it's flooding (kind of like my old carbureted car and bike used to do, but I doubt it's the case here, I'm just describing it - - like a stutter).

Anyway, up till today, it only happened upon starting, but today after work it stalled when riding. Not exactly sure what I did, I think it was when I was downshifting, preparing for a stop. I think I had the clutch pulled in, then noticed it had stalled. Tried to start it by slowly letting out the clutch in 4th, back tire started skidding, so just used the starter. Was fine after that. This all happened before the bike was warm, maybe 4 minutes after starting.

Does this sound like something that might be fixed by a computer solution or something more like a hardware problem.

Hard to say.. it's not normal behavior. Idle speed is controlled by the stepper-motor valves in the throttle-bodies. I understand the computer the mechanics use has some ability to change the settings of the steppers (and the idle speed.) It could be a computer setting, or it could be the steppers aren't responding correctly.

What speed does your bike normally idle at when warmed up?

I believe the bike runs at a steady 1000rpm when it's warmed up. Is that normal?

That's a tiny bit low - mine idles at 1,100 RPM. Oilheads used to like 1,100 also.. they ran rough below that speed. It still shouldn't stall at 1k..
