Can anyone out there tell me if corrosion on the stick coils may be bad news? After about 20 mins riding I get noticeable vibes - almost like someone has thrown a switch. Could this be a coil breaking down when getting hot as CycleRob has mentioned in the past? The bike is a twin-spark so I presume the secondary plug will still do the job of combustion.

The coil doesn't look good but I can't conclude that this will cure the missing. The corrosion could have been caused by a hairline crack in the insulation arcing to the rocker cover body. Take a look inside the hole where the coil fits and see if you can see signs of this happening.
If the coil has this amount corrosion, it should be replaced anyway and if it cures the vibration it will be a bonus.

I forget ot mention that the stick coils I replaced last week cost me (AUS)$401for the pair. Ouch! It made a huge difference to starting and smoothness.

Thanks Keith. I am trying to get hold of a used stick to use as a diagnostic tool before I fork out my hard earned dosh on these ridiculous prices. I just paid £22 for a new coil for my Mazda 626! How do BMW justify these numbers??

Great idea to first diagnose. Shelling out whatever £s for the stick coil will hurt a lot less if it fixes the problem.

No. These are the secondary plug (underside) cables and they attach to a coil under the tank. I believe they are High Tension leads. The ones I am talking about are the coils that attach directly to the primary plugs as per the picture in the 1st post.

I can't figure out what the parts Frbank6's linked to actually are - they appear to be stick coils for the primary plugs, but with HT wires and an odd plug on the other end...

I hope someone can shed light on this, because I'm ordering some if they are what they seem to be. An added feature is it says they don't require the special tool in the kit to pull them off the spark plugs.

Just emailed beemerboneyard and asked them, so I'll let everyone know what they say.
