BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

Hi all, been lurking for a few months now, but thought I'd say hi now I've made the commitment! After research and reading here a lot of owner's experiences with this bike, I finally put a deposit down on an 03 R1150R with 7,100 miles on the clock and a heap of extras Picking her up 1st of June hopefully.

A question I had was, I'm looking to replace the front fender with the Wunderlich version but it only comes in carbon fibre or unpainted, what would the best route be for getting it painted to match? BMW dealer? Or would an average auto shop be able to match the color?

I was almost put off by the spline failure issue, but I'm hoping it's late enough in 03 not to be affected (It was registered in September). I'm going to start a 'warchest' emergency fund just in case for down the road though...

Congrats and welcome. You didn't say what color your new ride is. If it's black, then it probably could be matched easily at an autobody place. If not, I'd probably look to BMW for a color match.

Speaking of replacing the fenders... I looked at some photos and the mounts seem to be different btw the Roadster and the Rockster. Does anyone know if the Rockster mudguards can be mounted to the Roadster with a modicum of difficultly? If not, where can I get something that looks like the mudguard for the Rockster? I googled the Wonderlich fender mentioned above and could only find the parts in Australia !

I agree with Buckster. I tried to have a Givi screen painted to match the granite grey color of my bike. The average auto shop cannot get the color codes from BMW to match it exactly. At least that is what they told me after two days of trying to find the code. Since the screen was not right up next to any other painted part, I thought the slight difference would not be noticeable so I let them go ahead and try to match it rather than taking it to BMW.. To everyone else, it probably wasn't a noticeable difference. But for me, it was off enough to bother me. It sits in my garage and I use another screen instead now. Granite Grey is a hard color to match though. Maybe they would not have as much trouble with silver or black, but I think one of the distinctive characteristics of a BMW is their classic colors. Even the BMW black seems to be unlike any other black. Perhaps, I'm biased?

And didn't we determine that exchanging the 'beak' was a sacrilege anyway?

Oops, didn't realise I was comitting sacrilege! I think I could probably grow to love the beak... might take a while though! Tbh, I was seduced by the wunderlich bits catalogue. Maybe after riding around for a while I won't mind anymore ...

Hawkman, as far as I can tell, the mounting system is different, I'm sure you can find Wunderlich parts closer than Australia though! Where are you based? I'm in Ireland, so I'll be sourcing from a UK supplier. The fender I was lookijng at essentially has the rockster look but fits the standard r1150r, I think it looks great...

BMW of Santa Cruz carries Wunderlich here in the US. Nice stuff but almost as expensive as buying accessories for a boat.(hole in the water you throw money into)

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the particular and specific shape of the beak is designed for necessary air flow to the engine.

True....I was not greatly pleased with the beak at first but now I wouldn't change it for anything else out there!

Re the painting issue--why not bring it to the local BMW auto body shop and let them do it?

Matching paint is not tough at all. I even bought (Atlanta Blue - the fastest color) some myself from this site to repaint my city lids. If I can do it that easily, u can 2!

I'm picking up next week, is there anything I should be looking out for especially? I've heard about checking the wiring loom at the headstock for chafing and the fuel disconnects for leaks, would there be anything else recommended beyond the obvious?

Those are good things to fix. I replaced mine with the Omegas BEFORE they had a chance to leak!

I believe you can order the paint from your BMW dealer. I imagine it is expensive though. You can even order it in spray cans. I can get part #s.
