(Almost) Completely FARKLEd

I know, I know.... one is never done with farkles!

But it's 10,000 miles, and the bank account is depleted, and there's very little space left on the frame or the body work to add anything else... so I'm estimating I'm about 98.4% complete.

I've tried, somewhat haphazardly, to include sources and costs. Nothing like Don's great articles, but perhaps useful to some.

It's been a really fun hobby, almost as satisfying as riding, and a good way to pass the rainy days.
But now spring has sprung and it's of great joy to actually USE the machine :D :D

Nicely farked indeed! (I do think perhaps paint on the fairing, although it might look just fine in person, could be photos don't really show it to best advantage..)

I see you mentioned the Kisan Tire Pressure Monitor system - how did you manage to get it out of them? I've been trying for months now.. Were there any problems with the install (a friend-mechanic is doing one for another friend and has had nothing but problems on the install on an 1150GS..)?

Funny you should mention that!

Nothing but problems. I've been working with them on getting the mounting bits to work. On my third version. I think someone in their company fairly recently purchased a R1200R, which should help get things to actually fit. I've got the front sensor working, but now the back (which was working) is completely out (no power to it). There have been just too many other priorities to start tracing things with my multimeter. Yet... I like the idea of it enough to keep futzing with it, when I make the time.

Bottom line: The tire monitor doesn't appear to be ready for prime time, at least on our bikes, just yet. Also, I've found it somewhat a challenge to talk to anybody in the company. Seems like getting Andy's extension is really a necessity. He does call me back.

Ah - what I suspected. Andy and I became buddies getting the headlight modulator to work with the CanBus.. they eventually did, but it did take a lot of phone/email to make it happen. Guess I'll hold on the TPM.. (wish the factory one could be retrofitted as I was promised when I bought the bike..)

hey Bill......what seat is that and where can I purchase it?.......I would guess Rick Myer....but I did not see this style on their web site.....

Well, Graf, you're movin' too fast! The seat name is in the title of the photo: Russell Day Long.

Russell is up in the same neighborhood as Rick Mayer. (Brother Bill Mayer's in Ojai). And there's a dramatic story about the design heritage that involves fathers and sons and brothers and buying and selling and... but that's another story.

Russell uses the original system of a steel spring to support the rider and Rick Mayer uses medical foam in different densities. Each have their advocates. I had a Rick Mayer saddle on my ST1100 and liked it. Thought I'd give the Russell design a try. I find it more comfortable for the long hauls, but not quite as street-corner friendly, requiring that I slide forward a bit to get my feet down. In practice, I just sit forward when I'm in stop-n-go in the city and slide back for longer stretches. Works fine for me. YBMV.

Looking good Bill. I like the spot that you mounted the gerbings controller - the pic info indicates that Don's site has info on this...couldn't find it on Don's website, do you have a url to the specific page?

Wow.
That's a lot of good work.

I did notice though that the top of the tank hasn't been touched. I worry that it feels a bit neglected.... O:)

Well, about the tank top, actually.. it has a bit of clear-film on the paint now - between the pin-stripes - to protect the paint from scuffing by the tank bag.

I just can't leave things alone.. was like that as a kid ("Put that away - they're bringing THAT kid along..") :mrgreen:

Being completely farkled on a bike is a terrible place to be. When that happens to me I either have to trade it in or sell it to start over, or buy another bike and start on it and keep them both. :smt120

BTW, I have a Russell Day Long on my Gold Wing and it is very good on long rides.

What I do at that point is start refining the farkles. Find better ones to replace ones I already added. Of course I have on occasion taken that to extremes http://www.eilenberger.net/K75S/K75S.html (and I don't even show the K100RT that I added ABS to.. requiring building an entire wiring harness.. :P

BTW, I have a Russell Day Long on my Gold Wing and it is very good on long rides.
They are - but thank Dog - the low seat works well for me - getting more comfortable the more I ride it. One of us broke-in - the seat or my butt.

Mine was a ride in to Russell followed by 1000+ miles and another ride in for adjustments, followed by doubt over if I had made an expensive mistake, followed by a 3500 mile trip. It was a long break in, but worth it.
