What is the next service after the 6000 mile service? What is done at this service? I have never owned a new motorcycle before and so I'm being gentle with if. Some day I'll start changing the oil myself but I don't want it to miss out on anything important to it's up keep.

I know it's at 12,000 or a year, but I'm not sure what they do. The list was in the R1150R owner's manual, but it's not there anymore.

I'm not absolutely sure but I think it is every 6k or year. I will be doing my valves probably every 3 months, I commute 150 miles a day.

The biggies at every 6k are
- Oil and filter change
- Valve adjustment
- Thottle body sync
AFAIK - BMW uses 6k for oil changes for both dino and synthetic oil. I will be sending a sample of my synthetic out to be analyzed at my next oil change (12k, coming up soon..) and see how it looks. I also would suggest that once the bike stops using oil (some do quite early if broken in right) - you can go to synthetic. Mine got synthetic at 6k and hasn't used any noticeable oil since 3,800 miles. I use BMW oil and filters while under warranty (so I have receipts showing I bought them - which is proof enough for warranty claims..)
At 12k - I'm guessing they add an "inspection" service - which is looking all the stuff on the bike over and making sure everything works well and moves easily, and nothing is worn.
To the above I'd add for 12k service:
- Check brake pads for thickness (easy to do..)
- Change transmission and rear-drive oils (75w-140 synthetic in the trans, 75w-90 synthetic in the rear drive) I bought BMW oils again for warranty purposes.
- Lube things like the center and side stand pivots, and any brake/shift linkages
- Check air filter, replace if needed
IF the bike has Chitown service (severe).. I'd probably do the oil changes more frequently, and do everything above every 6k miles with the exception of the oil change on trans and rear-drive.
