Road Signs

Post by duckdave »

So I ran across this topic on AVRider on Road Signs,
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182457
and I wanted to post my favorite sign, but first I wanted to read through the posts to make sure my sign had not been posted...

Well, I've been working on it for a couple of weeks now and I'm on like page 35 of 130 pages of posts...

Well, gezse, I'll never make it through all that, and I wonder if anyone on RR has anything they'ld like to post, so here goes...

My favorite road sign from NC. We were camping in the Smokies. (This is an Airstream story, not really a motorcycle story, but if I had my m/c there it could have been a m/c story!) I was sent out for something, I don't know... ibuprofen or something... I think I followed the directions given, but when I came across this sign, I had to ask myself... did I make wrong turn somewhere?

Oh, and this one is not really "one of mine". It's probably made the email rounds, but it's still a fav:

I saw one similar one day in Little Rock next to a pile of dug up sidewalk. It said, "Free Concrete."

Don't have a shot of it yet, but a sign on I-65 North in Kentucky says
"Used Cows For Sale". I always smile when I read that.

I got a kick out the sign permanently painted on the side of Joe's Crab Shack in New Orleans that said (before Katrina demolished the restaurant), "Free Crabs Tomorrow".

Tommorow, it seems, never came...

I was in a tornado event in NC and a furniture store had the end ripped off and all the furniture sucked out like a toothpaste tube.
Someone painted "Open House Sale" on the side the day after the tornado.

I came across this sign yesterday in Waxahachie. On the town square, across from the courthouse, there is a building called the 1879 Chisholm Restaurant (in the picture - greenish bldg on right side of photo), and this is what is on the front post. Not wanting to be labeled as either "loose" or a "thief", I quickly left..........
and used the side entrance.

I'm trying to remember a news story I heard a few months ago about a town in Mexico (I think) that had such a bad pickpocketing problem it was affecting the economy by scaring away tourists. So the town put up a sign like the one above and pickpocketing skyrocketed! They couldn't undersatnd why, so somebody went out to watch and noticed that as soon as people saw the sign, they'd immediately check for their valuables by patting the pocket they were carried in. It's a natural reaction that lurking pickpocketers watched to determine exactly which pocket to pick, and were more successful with every attempt.

I thought it was ironic, and a useful tip to not check your stuff if you see pickpocket signs...

Here's a real place that I found while wandering some unmarked backroads in West Virginia back in 2003:

This is a cemetery I have passed numerous times in the Texas Hill Country. I don't want to even think about why it's named the way it is:

Here's a marker that explains it:
