Am I mistaken or have I read somewhere about a plate (perhaps stainless steel) which can replace the pillion seat on the R1150R

It's plastic, not steel but I coated mine with Rhino bed liner to protect it and make it less slick for packing.

Mines painted flat black, with a coat of matte clearcoat....looks sweet

I've mounted the silver tail-rack to mine.... will put up pics when I can.

Hey everyone, I have looked at the cover plate and thought...can we do something better. How about if the cover actually was shaped upward, more like the shape of the seat (plus a bit higher?) - this would provide some valuable storage space and would simulate the current seat shape. Notice how the back seat rises at the front edge - this keep me from sliding back during acceleration. As much as I would like to replace the rear seat, I need that shape, and the noted "flat" cover does not provide that.

Now, since I'm in the business of building things, if there was interest by enough "R" owners, I might conside having some made and selling them here through the forum "Buy, Sell & Trade".

The good thing about the current plates height is that it is flush with the top of the saddlebags. If you put a bag across it, you do not have to worry about bending stuff, and it is easier to swing your leg over.

I have also used the Rhino liner paint.

dnat - I would be more interested in cargo shelf to strap on the traveling bags, sort of like is done for the GS for their tail section. For now, I agree with Jeff, it works pretty good for me.

I have one on my R and on a long fast run I find myself slipping back off the seat. It's okay if you have a load on the back as this can support you and stop you slipping back. but empty, I do not like the lack of support.

One of the early members, Pat of Patrick's Playhouse, had something like what you are describing. Looks like it sits on the seat rather than the plate, though. The plate would make it even larger internally. But I like the backrest effect.

I'd downloaded the picture at one point in thoughts of trying something like that. IIRC you might be able to find a detailed description by searching Pat's posts... but be forewarned, he was an active poster so there will be a bunch of them!

If you get one going, I'd be interested as well.

I've had the Rockster panel on the back of my RR for about a year now and am reasonably happy with it. It's not very tough plastic so I'm a little leary about attaching tie downs to it which would make it really handy.

It's a great base for my Chicane tail bag though. Being 5'8", it lowers the bag enough that getting leg over merely resembles yoga, not acrobatics. No pics and it's too rainy to go look at the bikes again, but here's a link to the bag.

I zip tied the bag to the rails in back and safety wired it to the underside of the panel in front, so I can still get the seat off without tearing anything apart.

I think I have the plate off my Rockster in the garage, I might be willing to part w/ it. I'll check after I get home from work in the morn...

The "legs" are currently just some plastic spacers and oversize nuts, I intend to replace them with aluminium or steel tube when I can lay my hands on something suitable.


It gives me alternate choices for luggage,


including the K1200RS "Soft bag"


Underneath the plate there is a support structure made from a polymer kitchen cutting board that takes most of the loading.
