What do I need to mount side cases?

Do I need the whole luggage rack?
I found someone selling side cases, and I want to pick them up for use with my bike.
Is the Rockster any different than the Roadster for side cases?
I currently have the optional luggage tie down mounts.
Thanks...

You will need rails. Roadster/Rockster are the same mounting points on the subframe - 1 bolt in each front section/2 bolts in each rear section.
Either the Roadster/Rockster 1150 style that include integral grab handles and mounting points for the luggage rack OR the 1100 and GS style that are flatter and have no grab handle or rack mounting points. Luggage rack is optional in any case.
You will have to ditch the tie down mounts. (But you can reuse the bolts.)

OK, thanks.
Do you know where I can get them and how much they cost? I couldn't find them on Bob's BMW website.

Not sure what the optional luggage tie down mounts are but take a look at the picture on the link below. click on Frame and Fairing and scroll down to case holder with luggage grid. There is a lot of info here so be patient and wait for the page to finish loading.
You need the mounting rails and the bolts and bits to mount them, you can see them all here. These parts are interchangable between the rockster and the R

I would also add the rack, it looks good and adds to the load carrying ability of the bike.

Hope this is helpfull.

Check for used ones too - they pop up all the time on these forums and even at local dealers. Great deals are out there.

Look is the Buys sell trade section here, then
http://www.ibmwr.org , then
http://www.advrider.com , and finally
http://www.beemerboneyard.com
You should be able to find the rails in one of these places. New they are about $100.

I have a set of mounts from a R11GS that also fit my R1150R that I would sell. They are the ones without the grab handles. Let me know if you're interested.

Sorry for hijacking this old thread. I have a question about the side case mounts.
I just installed a pair on my R1150R, and now when trying to put a case on, the metal
latch of the case doesn't seem to be grabbing on that securely. Is there a piece of the mount
I have to remove so that it leaves a bigger notch for the case latch to grab? Thanks. I would
rather not remove them again, even though it's pretty simple.

No, do not remove any pieces. There is a plastic insert where the hook contacts the rails that looks like it could come out -- but it can't. Your metal hook on the bags might possibly be bent, reducing the clamping force, but probably not; just make sure you always put the lower "holder" into the notch on the front of the cases.

Thank you, NoRRmad. They seem to hold well now. What I wasn't doing was fitting that notch on the lower front of the cases around the passenger footpeg brackets. Now they are very secure. Is that what you meant?

It means you probably have a very good set of tight-fitting cases. Bonus!
If they are a sloppy fit, it's normally a combination of wear between the rails and the two case hooks. This allows the cases to vibrate on rough roads and eventually wear a pronounced groove in the plastic rails and underside of the plastic case hooks. Partially solved with some hard (but flexible) aircraft grade leading edge tape (or similar), but the looseness only gets worse over time.
When I sold my R, I had to swap the cases with the almost new ones that came with my GS. The new cases worked well on the worn rails of the R, and the worn cases worked well on the new rails on the GS.
The fitting technique is to engage the front hook and the foot post at the same time, then engage the rear hook. Push down hard to latch the handle as it takes the load off the mechanism.
Also note that the two instances I know of where cases have broken their hooks were with very lightly loaded cases. They seem to last longer if there is some weight in them.
