BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

I was fortunate enough to find a set of BMW system cases for my R1200R on eBay for $500 (over half off retail) and they are in like new condition. I received the cases the other day and they came with one key which was keyed to the original owner of the cases R1200ST. This gentleman I purchased from lives in California and I am in NYC. I knew I was getting one key and the key that came with the bags was also the ignition key to his ST which he traded in for a GS.

Is it possible to get a key made for the bags by someone other than BMW? I don't need this key coded since it's not to the ignition--just the bags. It doesn't even have to look like the BMW key..as long as it opens the bags that would be fine. I called a few BMW dealers and they said since that key is also the ignition key to another bike they would not be able to order a key for the bags which is kind of understandable.

My other option is to replace the locks and have new locks installed which is about $150 in total--something I'd rather not do of course.

Since you have the key and you can get to the lock cylinders - I think you may be able to re-code the lock cylinders to your key. Search the web and you'll find instructions on how to do that.

Thanks for the input..to clarify..I was quoted $150-ish to recode my ignition key to new lock cylinders ... cylinders are about $35 each and was quoted one hour labor to take old cylinders out and reinstall new cylinders for a total of about $150..the money is not a huge issue but would rather put that $ towards some other farkles.

I don't think the 1200 cases are quite as easy to re-key as the R11xx lock cylinders.

I would take the cases to a locksmith and ask them what they'd charge to key them to your ignition key. I can't imagine it would be anywhere near $150.

That's assuming you cannot get the lock cylinders out yourself.

I paid less than half for the locks and to have mine keyed.

They are not that hard to do. I did mine.

There is a website that has a very good write-up on how to remove the old locks and put the new ones in. If you buy non-coded cylinders, they are fairly cheap and you can key them to your ignition key quite easily. If I can find the website, I will post it here, but if you do a search on this website and the K-bikes website, I think you will find it yourself.

You should be able to do this for less than $50. I screwed on of mine up and had to take the entire sidecase apart...not recommended, but not that hard either.

The top cases are a different matter. I tried it but gave up and continue to use a different key for it.
