1. Just bought a 2002 R1150R ...

It's my first bike and was a bit apprehensive about the power ... Especially about a hypersensitive throttle ..

However, I was pleasantly surprised ...

But, when I spoke to other experienced riders, they found it unusual that the throttle was not more responsive - for engine of this size ... their reference points were japanese bikes - in some cases 1000cc sport bikes from Honda, etc..

Some felt that the injectors might be clogged.

Would be keen to hear back your thoughts ..

2. I'm finding that the friction zone is not enough to get the bike moving - throttle is required. Also, finding that I cannot fully release clutch until bike is well in motion.

Is this normal ?

3. What are the recommended rpm levels for shifting through various gears ..

I was told that I might be shifting too soon ...

You're comparing apples to oranges re performance. The R bikes also has a dry clutch, rather than a wet clutch on most sport bikes. This will make the clutch behave differently.

The boxer twin really likes its rpms between 4500 rpms and redline. Shifting can be done at any rpm, but shifting abover 4k makes shifting really nice when you're running through the gears. Opinions will vary.

The R bike doesn't like to be lugged, so if you're at 2k rpms, nail the throttle, you're not going to go anywhere fast. Keep the rpms above 4k and have fun.

Of course, I don't know the state of tune of your bike, so there may be something wrong with it. Perhaps you can find someone that had or currently owns a R bike; they will be able to give you a more objective answer re the state of tune.

1. What he said... correct and good advice. Follow it.

2. Tallish first gear requires some finesse on start up...that means give it some gas to go.

3. Run it all over for a full tank of gas - high speed, low speed, high rpm, low rpm, just no lugging the engine. Take every kind of road- highway, urban, country sweepers, hilly twisties, etc. Add some Techron (not a whole bottle) to the next tank of gas and repeat. Third time's a charm - remaining Techron and another full tank across the gamut of uses. That'll be 500-600 miles of your kind of riding.

Then you'll know.
