I was cleaning my bike yesterday and a saw some oil I've never seen before. Is this normal? Should I take it in?
Thanks, Dave

I'd definitely take it in.
It doesn't look catastrophic, so I don't think you need to schedule an emergency appointment (depending on how far away from the dealer you are), but I'd have it checked out - at the least, you don't want to have to keep cleaning that, do you?

Abby-normal. Looks like a rear seal (or the counter-balance shaft seal) leak. Take it in - they'll have to R&R the trans to fix this one.

this is what Atlanta BMW wrote me today....
Dave,
The leak is probably from the rear engine seal, or the counter balance shaft seal, or possibly the front transmission seal. Its hard to tell until we remove the transmission. Either way we need to make an appointment and get it in to do the work. It's under full warranty of course. No hurry as it a minor leak and it would be fine to let it go for a while. This type of leak doesn't usually turn into a severe leak and some customers have been running them like this for years. Check the fluid levels. The down side is that if it gets worse it could get on the clutch and cause you some grief if you're far from home(clutch slippage). So, for now keep riding the bike.
Thanks,
Bob

Whilst I don't have a leak in the same place, my R12R has starting its oil leak from the oil level window. I noticed recently there was some oil around the bottom of the bike just below the window, then the bike just started consuming more oil. Before I knew it (well actually after about another month), I noticed the visible build up of oil on the outside of the oil window. Oil consumption has also picked up dramatically and I'll be bringing it in to BMW next week. This only after 9000 kms. Boy am I miffed about that.
Dave: How many miles/kms do you have on yours. It looks pretty clean, meaning it's probably a young little beast.
