Please help me, mechanically literate types. I need a new one of these.

Tomorrow, when I call around to locate one, I would like to know what to call it. "thing-a-ma-bob" or "whatz-a-ma-doo-dad" just don't help that much.

It's a big brass threaded gear block/nut that climbs up and down on this worm gear.

It looks like a ball nut from an Acme screw. They'll probably need to know the "lead" of the screw. To find this, measure an inch on the screw and count the number of threads.

Hope this helps :D

The bottom picture looks like the lead screw on a lathe. If so, the big square thing is called a "feed nut." If this is a garage door opener or something... I dunno.

"ball nut" "acme screw"

Thank you! that's what I needed I think. I just didn't have the vocabulary. It should help make the phone calls go a little smoother. It is part of the lifting mechanism for the bowl on a big food service dough mixer.

Of course it is all an excuse to take the bike on a ride tomorrow.
