I just picked up a used (older one in black plastic case) signal minder.

I have read the all of the old posts regarding this thing. I have read of quirky behavior especially in high temps (from Herb, aka SJBMW) and others.

It seemed to work fine after installation: in the garage, key turned on, motor off. I headed off to work without a test ride. I was happy, seemed to work just fine.

So today, I took it for a ride. The thing was all wonky.

1. running lights were turned off, they turned themselves on
2. running lights were on, they would flicker
3. self canceling would happen after 0-20 seconds, apparently randomly, even with brake on (brake wire installed)
4. self cancelling would happen sometimes so fast that the flashers didn't even flash once
5. etc, etc, etc

I tried Every possible dip-switch setting, every "on the fly" setting, brake wire attached and not attached: Wonky, wonky, wonky, wonky

It was really hot. The weatherman keeps using words like "blistering" "oppressive" etc.

Anybody else have such troubles? Did I get a junker? Am I being punished for being such a cheap-skate?

I've never had a problem with mine, had it for 1 1/2 years. Mine is in a shiney metal can. Bought mine on e bay was new.

Same here. I have never had any problems.

What you are describing is either heat related failure of the internals or prior owner sold a used model that has corrosion, moisture, shock damage from some incident (not suggesting abuse or seller omission, just heavy, debilitating prior use).

Best to write it off and get a new model. They do NOT all do that!

Mine has worked fine for 4 years now.

Mine has been flawless, I consider it to be an asset with one exception. When waiting at a left turn lane light, I have to hit the blinker several times, due to the self cancel. Now if they can figure out a way to make it realize that your not moving, and won't engage the cancel unless you are moving, it would be perfect.

Owldaddy They thought of that. The wire that goes to the brake light keeps it from cancelling while waiting as long as the brake is on.

thanks for the info, I didn't hook that wire up, I thought it was just there to use the blinkers as brake lights also, and since I have the flashing LED brake lights, I just didn't think I needed that function. I will reconsider my needs.

Second what most here have said about SM.
I've had mine for nearly 2 years and it has performed flawlessly.

I installed my SM-5 last year and it has been largely trouble-free. However, once in a while it takes 2 or 3 hits on the cancel button to get it to actually cancel. But it's intermittent and a minor annoyance. If it gets worse I'll contact Kisan.

Other than that, it's one of the best accessories that i have added.
