Kilometers

Hey to all,
I'm new to this board. that's because i just bought a '03' Rockster. I love the machine and the look off it. I drove now a 2000 km and of course I've now experienced the feel of a naked bike. GREAT! But I have an other question. Touring with my friends, we've noticed that there kilometergauge was always 10 percent more then mine; they drove 100 km and my gauge was at 90 km. Is there anyone who has the same problem? I din'dt found it on the board. so I'm angious. Is this tyres diameters or a wrong gear in the cable (is it mechanical or elektronic ?)
Hope anyone has an answer!

For some reason BMW under-gestimate their speedo's..to the negative side..(reads 100..actual 90)
They are almost 10% out because the fines for the manufactures in Germany are huge if they are wrong on the plus side.
It might save you from speeding tickets..
Anyway..that's what I think...I may be wrong...welcome aboard..

DJ is not too far from most riders' impression, that BMW is optimistic in their speedometer reading. However, being that BMW will be erring on the conservative side, your meter reading should read HIGHER than your actual speed. This way you will not get ticketed (as often) because you are going slower than the speedometer says you are.
That means your speedometer should be reading 110km/hr when your friends' are reading 100km/hr. Or maybe they're lying to you.

Hey Javama, are you talking about the speedo or the odo? I ride an '04
Rockster and my wife an '04 R1150R. Our speedo's are a match, but I always
have 4% less KM's on the odo...
PS a bike produced in 2003 is refered to by those american guys 'n girls as
an '04 model...

No it's the odo, you have 4 % less but I have 8 % less. the speedo it pretty precise!

I am experiencing the same thing. It appears that the speedometer readout is higher than that of my friends (I've checked with Aprilia's and Suzuki's). It keeps me from getting tickets but I would have preferred to have a guage without margin. But when I compare the odometers, it always seems that I drive less kilometers... You would think that the two gauges are connected and I guess that the internal gauge gear ratio is somewhat off.

My odo is about 5% less than the reading I get from my GPS.
The speedo is more like 10%, but I don't mind not being ticketed.
Oddly enough on my last trip, max speed was 115 mph and there was no way I was over 90...

This is true for my GPS speed vs. my RTs speed, so I don't think this is purely something only the R versions have. This seems to be across the board.
