Rode up to Lake George on saturday, it was a good ride about 180 miles one way....The problem is that when I gunned it quick bursts of smoke came out of the can, then it did not do it for awhile. Is there a problem? Or is it, they all do that. I have 4500 miles on it '04 blk. I think it is oil related......Need to know

How much smoke we talking here? You saw it behind you while riding (that would have to be a lot), or did someone else see it?

Yes, alot and people did see it also. Once the it came out it stopped, then I gunned again at around 65 to 80 mph, it happen again. On the way back home no smoke.....even when I opened her up. Not black smoke like white/lt.gray

Plus site glass was full when I left, when I returned it was empty......I know it burns oil, but damn!

When you say "full", how full exactly? To the top, to the dot?

If it's to the top of the red circle or sight glass, then your a bit overfilled. The smoke is probably from blow by due to increased crank case pressure I would think. I've been wrong before though It's easy to overfill these things too if the oils not at OT when you change it...

Called Cliff's BMW they told me to drain the air box and see if there is any oil in there......If there is that is a good thing just let it drain out, if no oil is in there could be an issue with the engine.

The day I got my used R, upon riding, I got clouds of smoke from the exhaust. Seemed to correlate with 1. Making a turn and 2. Hitting the throttle (pretty good hit...). Turns out, the prior owner, wanting to do me a favor, topped up the oil. The big problem was that he was looking at the sight glass either with the engine running or too soon after shutting it down.

I drained the oil - got eight (yes eight) quarts of oil out of it, which included the one quart drained out of the air box.

Here's what happens - if the sump is too full, during cornering, the oil gets sucked up through a breather into the air box, as well as into the engine = smoke. So, indeed make sure you follow the oil check method precisely and drain the air box.

And if you are using oil that fast, there IS a problem.

DAMN! More than double... I'm amazed it ran at all.

I guess the breather keeps it from blowing seals.

I drain the air box, had at least a pint or two up in it............Since I got back from lake george, ny on saturday I have not ridden I will ride it soon two see if this worked or not. Also my throttle side heated grip decided to not work coming back home I glad it is summer, BTW one of my riding buddy's almost had his hayabusa jacked, the criminal minds use a screwdriver type object in the ignition and totally wrecked it. we could not start it had to u-haul it back to mt. vernon.....It was a long day, boys. About 4 bikes were jacked on that saturday all sport bikes......

It sure looks like "overfilled". Sorry about you buddy's bike. I guess nobody want to steal Beemers.

I was in Boxborough MA last week and left it out in the parking lot every night without any issues; other than waking up every 30 minutes to see if it was still there.

Do any of you use a lock?
Is there a steering lock on the RR that I don't know about?
Even my '72 XS650 had one of those.

Yes, turn the bars far left, and turn key left, I think I did this once. ps, you may have to wiggle the bars a bit.

It works in both directions, actually.

You know the second I read your post, I had to go try. Sure enough, both ways! I guess I am used to the old bikes, only one way, like me.

When you use the steering lock, be careful that you don't turn the key too far to the left. If you do, you'll turn on the parking lights.
