I am getting ready to go on a long trip from Chicago to FLORIDA! i was told that i can safely remove the exhast can (i like the sound) and not have any problems... do any of you object to this??? I like haveing the single sided swing arm open! looks sick! but i do not want to harm my bike or ruin its reliability!

Pop it off and don't look back. I've had mine off for several months with no problems. Sounds much better and you will notice the weight loss immediately.

Four years without that can now and never experienced any problem. Dealer is ok with it too.

Anyone in the UK done this and tried to get the bike MOT'd???

Had mine mot'd last month without the can, no problems.

I took my bike to the test station a week before the test and asked for advice. The tester loved the look and sound of my £10 halfords tailpipe, and said it was not too loud or offensive so he would be happy to give it a pass.


This is at the testers discretion so take your bike along before the test is due and ask, if they say no try another test station.

Five years now for me...all good..no probs..go for it..I had mine officially sound tested..and it passed..

What tail-end did you put on? got a pic?

Here are some pics of the tail pipe. ( The tail pipe is Halfords own brand not ripspeed and cost about £10, it is the bigger one of the two they have I think it is the 58mm diameter.)

Another benefit of this mod is it allows the fitting of a full size case from an RT.

It is well worth the investment of your time to take the can off and try it, I will be very surprised if you don't like the sound that your bike makes.

The sound will be deeper and a bit louder, but not loud enough to offend, I often return from work well after midnight and set out again at 7 am and my neighbours have never complained. (I have asked them to tell me if it bothers them, and if so I will reinstate the silencer.)

Also before I removed the silencer I had a few near misses with myopic pedestrians who walked out in front of me. Now when they step up to the kerb they hear me coming and look around.

We bought our endpipes at a carshop.
There's much choice in endpipes.

Well, I took the plunge today... Did my exhaust:







I think I'm still going to take the lower heat shield and flip it around like I've seen on other bikes here. But my initial impression is the bike loves it. I'm not going down the road leaning sideways (as some people have suggested ), I don't feel any more vibration, If anything it's actually smoother than it was. And the sound.... it's got just enough of a growl... absolutely music to the ears.

Best $8.00 I ever spent...

I just shipped mine, and I can say, the can weighs more than the cat.

Must get rid of that pesky catalytic converter too. Then and only then will your bike be truly free.

Done that. But TOO loud w/o a can. Remus is mine.

I removed the can and installed a black tip but I was unable to turn the heat shield around due to the angle of the shield and placement of the clamp.

So, any ideas how to paint the chrome heat shield black?

Type of paint to use or other suggestions.

Not much of a chance to get paint to stick to chrome unless you sand blast it first. You could try to rough it up some with sandpaper but...?

Another exhaust clamp like the one close to the shift lever, brake pedal or the center one in front of the engine will work, i've got one on order, $20.
