BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

Hi, Yesterday I bought my first BMW, a 2002 R1150 R. It does have a small windscreen, probably 10" or so high.
I think that I will need better wind protection to lessen buffeting on longer rides.
What do you guys recommend? What are the options?

Welcome, I too just recently purchased a Black 2001 R, I'm told that black is very fast. The individual that sold it to me provided me with three windshields, two touring and one sport.

It has been windy in my part of the country and experimenting I found less buffeting with the touring windshield. There is another company that provides after market (Aero - something) that makes a huge touring windshield it almost looks like a fairing.

The screen you have is probably a speedster like mine.



Not much protection but it seems that the bigger screens actually end up buffeting you more. After adding a couple of electrical grommets between the top mounting screws and the back of the screen to tilt it forward about 5mm mine is good up to 90mph.

I have a 19" Parabellum I have retired. The bike likes it naked.

I removed the mirrors in favor of bar ends, it a nice view.

Welcome guys...I also have a Black RR..I bought mine in 01 and I know black is the fastest color..

I like the bike for its naked look..the small fly screen helps keep that naked look..and you will get used to that little bit of buffeting.

This is what I use now...it's from a 650GS...it's even smaller than the fly screen...and has no bufferting at all..plus keeps the wind off the chest.

I absolutely love my speedster fly screen! It gives reasonable protection and it looks great. It kind of gives it a minor hooligan look instead of the goofy touring bike look of the big touring screens. Yeah sometimes function must take a backseat to form.

I just removed the black Givi touring screen and replaced it with the speedster that you've seen pictured. I'm going to make the small adjustment with the angle for a bit more wind deflection. Bottom line is that the bike just looks so much better. You see it, but it doesn't take away from the beauty. Enjoy your ride

If this is a dumb comment, please forgive. But I trust you wear ear plugs. No, it doesn't stop buffeting. But I sure notice buffeting more at he end of a ride when I'm "unplugged".

You also may want to try it with no screen at all. I rode mine that way for a while. I wound up with the sport screen, but naked does mean cleaner air at the helmet.

I thought about the touring screen, but wind flow helps a lot with heat here in Alabama. So, even if I got the touring shield, it would come off for much of the year.

I like the look of the sport screen. And I have gotten pretty used to the buffet.

The little speedster screen is my favorite, although I have a sport screen for winter riding. Buffeting is worse on the taller screen but air flow is less.

I use the speedster for 'touring'. Just did 800 miles or so in less than 36 hours with it! Lots of it in the rain!

+1 on the earplugs though!

I should have mentioned that the buffeting is also highly dependent on the height of the rider and other factors.

I used the speedster screen for 2 years until switching to a slightly taller replacement from http://www.bikescreens.com

Works great and uses the OEM hardware.

My RR (black of course!) has the same screen; it doesn't protect much
but its aestetically fitting the bike. I will try the grommet trick as suggested by Chris.

Thanks to all for the welcome and good information. Yes, mine is the Speedster as shown in Chris' great picture and in DJ's exposure.
Just hauled the black beauty home yesterday and took my first short ride last evening.
I'll have to just log some miles and see. Changing the angle of the screen seems like a good idea.

Welcome! Here in Chitown, it's a bit cooler most of the year, so I have a 23" parabellum. It works well for me, but lot's of wind noise.

I took the path less taken. Really less taken. It's a flyscreen from a stock Buell Blast, painted the bike's new color that was taken from a 2000 Ford Mustang called "SunBurst Gold". It requires tiny homemade brackets and drilling 2 holes in the headlite shell.
It protects the chrome gauge shell from bugs-n-grit. It provides a small, barely perceptible change in the windblast. It hides the dated Retro look of the 1150R's massive chrome instrument package - - - the original goal. It blends perfectly, after heating, bending and permanently mounting it to the bike, with the modern lines of the design. See for yourself:

Sweet looking screen. I love what you have done. I really like the Buells look and I like how you incorporated it to your R.
Have you ever thought of powder coating your wheels gold? I think that would really set that bike off nicely!
