I am reminded of the good ole boys a few decades ago, talking among themselves about how "that there fancy" front-wheel drive on the Oldsmobile Tornado will NEVER become an industry standard. They claimed it would be too expensive a repair, prone to more problems, and a, "...technical/mechanical nightmare that'll never take off!"

Man, what a great...and relevant...analogy! 40 year old Oldsmobile front drive and modern BMW braking systems. Now I get it...

I've learned you can't shut down threads like this. There are those who will just start another thread about the moderators not being "moderate" and they'll continue to spew, and spew, and spew, and spew, and spew, and spew....


...and badger "non paying guests". That one irks me quite a bit.

This really is ridiculous. A new person comes along asks an honest question and this thread is the result. Who would want to become a paying member?

3) You're right! And I did. We had a vintage Brit & Euro club meeting with the new Japanese vintage club as our guests. Watched Rossi win...again, on a big screen. And 2 Americans get 3rd & 4th. And a Texan get 3rd!
And Tony *finally* win a Cup race after a long dry spell.
All in all...a very good day.

This was a good ABS discussion, so what if people are opinionated at spout their opinion...

You guys really want boring, technical discussions of such topics with no 'color', I don't.

I'm guilty not only of speaking my mind whenever I want (not married, guess why) but also I have a bad habit of hanging around on the AdvRider website and those guys will ruin any chance of civility. I'll try and behave, but as some of the old timers know, I can NOT behave just as easily........

I go off riding for a few hundred miles and look what happens!

Some start wailing the thread should be killed... One wonders *exactly* what topics, and how those topics should discussed, would meet the *criteria* of useful discussions for those who don't want this thread to continue...

Fortunately, the moderators seemd to fully understand that this is a "discussion" forum.

Some accuse people (inappropriately and inaccurately, I might add...) of people who don't like one piece of techno-gimcrackery as being against all things "new & different"... What a crock, and exactly "where" are those Oldsmobile Toronado's now, and why is their a landslide movement in the entire auto industry back to rear-drive fullsize cars? Front-wheel systems have for the past five plus decades been more about "packaging" than about any real performance improvements... and it started with the Austin Mini. Pulling Olds Toronado's into this discussion was the biggest red herring I've seen to date...

And low and behold, for whatever reason, Sarah and her husband buy one non-ABS R1150R, and are shopping for a second non-ABS R1150R (just take a look at the "Buy, Sell, & Trade" page of this forum...). Makes one sort of wonder what might have happened if no one other than the pro-ABS crowd had been allowed to speak...

For those that like and support spirited discussion and passionate viewpoints exchanged openly, I applaud you.

For those of you don't, I have just one suggestion... If you don't like it, don't read it. No one is forcing you to consider opposing views and desenting opinion.

abs is one of those things that may not save your butt in all situations,

that having been said, it may save your butt in the situation you find yourself in, and if you don't have it, it is too late to write the check.

Here we go again!

I have developed a new outlook on the BMW servo ABS Power brakes after my last long trip.

1. In all normal riding conditions they are a good thing to have and increase safety.

2. When riding extreme WFO...the ABS part not good at all. The servos (the power brake part on the newest Beemers, K1200S/R, the R1200 RT/ST and GS) no prob at all.

I spent two days and 600 miles on the Range of Lights Gypsy Tour playing serious, WFO go-fast with a guy who was a veteran of numerous track days on his K1200S. We were completely out of sight of the go-fast contingent. The only time that the ABS gave me pause (mild understatement) was when I wanted to show him just what an old fart could do on a lowly boxer twin . Normally I would ride just behind him, but every once and a while I wanted to keep him humble I would pass him and within a mile or two would be completely out of sight, I soon found out that you have never lived until you entered a twisty hair pin at 130 slam on full brakes only to find the ABS kick in on some bumps. . I loved the brakes on the Power Cup bike, no servos and no ABS, strictly serious.

The Result of this ride brought me to the conclusions above. The truth be known, I would suggest and reccomend the servo ABS BMW brakes to all but the most aggressive and skilled riders. I wish my ST had an on off ABS switch like the R1200GS bikes do, on for all but serious go-fast riding.

Deano - sounds like a fun ride. I have a related question. Do you know how the GS brakes work when the ABS is off? Is the servo still "live" or do you have non-servo full normal EVO brakes or do you have non-servo "residual" brakes like on the RR with the ignition off. Can't see that it matters if you're in the dirt with a GS, where you don't really need much braking power at all, but just curious.

Also, is there a single fuse I could pull on my 2004 RR (ABS) that would defeat the ABS/servos & just leave me with the residual brakes for practice purposes?

Here is an objective thought experiment that will reveal the truth:
Your ABS III bike is out of warranty and the brakes have failed. Dealer diagnosis is to replace the main control unit for about $3500. What do you do?

I have ABS III on my K12RS and have considered this scenario from the beginning. I suspect what I would do is to investigate a non-ABS, non- servo braking system.
