Getting back to the heating and removal of the locknut and pivot bolts I stumbled on this pic saved from somewhere on the net. It's a borrowed pic and the owner should be proud he/she survived it and chime in with more details. Guess what caused the Aluminum housing to weaken and catastrophically fail at the worst moment. Acetelyene or propane torch?

I advise you to use the bikes substantial Summertime systemic heat to generously preheat the housing. How? A good 40 mile (64km) freeway blast in 90degF+ heat (32.2C) immediately prior to your using an electric heat gun to finish the job and loosen the nuts/bolts. If a BMW dealer is doing it, schedule (delay) it for Summer and make it easier and safer.
