Bikermeow...

You don't have to worry... Putting a Y-pipe on your bike won't single-handedly "kill the environment". There are plenty of diesel trucks, buses, and lorries worldwide wih no emission controls whatsoever to do that. Even if you rode your bike 24/7/365 from now until the end of your days your mounting a Y-pipe would have absolutely no effect on global warming, depleting the ozone layer, or causing cancer...

The exhaust will actually be far *COOLER*, as there will be no catalytic converter to trap and hold excessive heat. Catalytic converters, by design, have to trap a lot of exhaust heat in order for them to get up to the proper temperature for them to do their magic (breaking down NOX and unburned hydrocarbons, etc.). Because of this both the exhaust system and the exhaust gas exiting the system are at much higher temperatures than they would be if you were using a freer flowing system.

You will *NOT* burn yuor system cases (panniers), nor will you roast the left rear turn signal light...

How do I know?

Because I have replaced the catalytic converter and the stock muffler and my left rear turn signal and my system cases are just fine after thousands of miles of operation.

Also, you will find a large portion of the members here have replaced their stock exhaust systems with various aftermarket items, and none of them has cooked off a turn signal or system case...

Cheers!

Downside? kill the environment and emit more heat and a more powerful exhaust blast, which may cook the rear left signal light, and toast side panniers.
Ha Ha...that's so funny... ....I wonder if after you left he cracked up laughing at you thinking you believed him...or if he was serious.. ....geees that still very funny.

btw...about the cat thing...here's what I heard...Using a cat will do more harm to the eviroment...untill it gets up to temp..then it helps a little....so...if you do a lot of short trips like I do...and a lot of city foke do...you may be doing more harm than good.

We have strict laws here about removing it so I've left mine on...but soooo many others have taken theirs off without any problems..no heat issues or melting panniers.. :D ...I may do it myself one day.

Was I told the right thing about cats...or was someone having 'me' on..

Quite right DJ, untill the cat gets up to temp it doesn't work at all efficiently (you must have noticed the "rotten egg" stink when you're following a car that's just been started up - right?) and even when up to temp all it does is change one noxious gas for a different noxious gas.
Throw the bastard thing away, as someone said earlier your bike ian't going to make any difference, especially when all your neighbours have this years "fashion accessory" 5 litre SUV.

I would not have so easily believe him, but for the fact that the dealer proceeded to show me a 1150Gs with a signal light with brownish (from heat) lens, and a left side panner with similar condition on the inside. Can't help feeling that he's showing it to me as part of the "Beware-what-you-buying" pre sale warning. The Y-Pipe that my dealer has is a Laser Y-Pipe.

Ah .. perhaps the Far East's ambient temperature of average 30 has something to do with it too.

Cheers
