Re: Are you worried ...
Actually - my '04 R1150RS was traded in for more than I paid for it 6 months earlier. I paid $9,000 delivered to my door, with bags and some other accessories. I trade it in - without ANY accessories for $9,000 against the R12R. Sold the bags/accessories/etc on the IBMWR Marketplace for about $1,000. If you don't count the tires I bought for that bike, I made money on it - and I bought it from a BMW dealer.
And 40% off - don't we wish. That would mean an '09 used would sell for $9,000. If PIG can find me any of these, I'll buy ALL of them he can find. Just ain't happening. Used '08's are going (and selling - I watch the ebay auction prices) for $12k+ or so (depending on Farkles), which is 80% of new price. '07's go for $10.5-11 (depending on Farkles and miles) 70% of new price. Giving a 40% off price is just pulling it outta your ass IMHO.
Hey WILDPIG - I've got a friend looking for an R12R who will give $9,000 for that POS you own and hate. Got a phone number he can call?

Re: Are you worried ...
I just bought a used 08 R1200R with warranty until 2011 for exactly $10k, just as a point of reference for resale values. This was from a BMW dealer so I'd expect a private sale to be somewhat less.
On the larger picture of the BMW ownership experience I'd say BMW's are somewhat more trouble prone than Japanese bikes, more on the order of a Harley. I've owned many Hondas (had 57k on the Valkyrie when I sold it) and they were trouble free. Harleys have issues related to the basic design while BMW's seem to have more problems with defective parts. I know that my BMW's have required more warranty work than an other bikes I've owned. They stand behind them pretty well though.

Re: Are you worried ...
Dale, if that was with bags, ABS, OBC, centerstand that was a smokin' deal. Without those that price makes sense (since the "bare" bike is $12,5k or so new..) with these accessories/options - the bare bike is around $15k+/-.Dale_K wrote:I just bought a used 08 R1200R with warranty until 2011 for exactly $10k, just as a point of reference for resale values. Re: Are you worried ...
Kelly Blue Book shows a bare 08 1200 r for around $12,500, so a $10,000 price with a dealer is a good deal unless of course he made up for it on the other side when he took it in which, is probably highly likely at a $10,000 figure. You win in any event.

And I guess you're proof of that - 40% loss of value going out the door talk.WILDPIG wrote:BUT LIKE I SAID--- MONEY TALKS AN BS WALKS
Yup - here is the bullsh!t you were spouting just a few days ago:
This Interweb thing is funny that way - crap talk usually comes back to haunt you.PIG wrote:I'D SAY YER PRETTY CLOSE WHEN YOU SAY A BMW LOSES 40% OF IT'S RE SELL VALUE THE INSTANT IT LEAVES THE DEALERS PARKING LOT. NOW WHAT MANY OF THE "DIEHARDS" FAIL TO ACCEPT IS THAT THERE IS A REASON BMW'S HAVE SUCH FANTASTICALLY POOR RESELL VALUE.

Re: Are you worried ...
Well, I definitely did a lot of research before buying my R12R, and durability was one of the key reasons I bought it.
If you think you're never going to have a problem, you're probably living in Narnia, but comparatively speaking I'm not concerned.
BTW Chitown I spent 4 hours looking at your trip photos the other night and I am gobsmacked
.
Although I guess back in the 'old days' people rode lesser bikes in equally extreme conditions. (Ted Simon comes to mind).

PRETTY OBVIVOUS TO ME YOU HAVE'NT GOT MUCH EXPERIENCE WITH SELLIN AND RE-SELLIN BMW'S---- I DO. UNIQUE HOWEVER IN THAT THIS IS THE 1ST BMW I VE EVER OWNED. I SPECT YOU THINK A 10-15% LOSS-- WELL YOU BEST THINK AGAIN. RE-SELL VALUE IS PITYFUL FOR A BMW REGARDLESS OF FARKLES OR MILEAGE-- AGAIN---- THERE'S A REASON BMW HAS SUCH A POOR RE-SELL--- I BET HOWEVER YOU CANT FIGGER OUT WHY.

OMG, a flame war on the R1200R discussion board! It's the first I've seen. People here are 99.999% respectful. Most posts are very helpful through at least interesting to a lot of us or, at worst, harmless chatter. I've only seen one person on here SHOUT, AND WOULDN'T YOU KNOW IT, IT'S A HARLEY GUY. It's the reason I stopped visiting the Harley boards before I even sold my Harley--too much $hit.

Don, you've posted some good ones, but that was one of my favorites. Instant removal of someone from my little universe. I just wish it was that easy with some of the people at work

Re: Are you worried ...
Of course you take a big hit with any new vehicle in the first year. However BMWs hold long term value. My 21yo K75s is now worth 50% of its original purchase price, no bad! and my 35yo R75/5 is worth about 4 times its original purchase price. A very lucky friend has a R50s and this is worth about 60 times its original purchase price. The point being is that you will lose money on any new vehicle, but some (ie BMWs) do hold up over the longer term.
Re: Are you worried ...
Not worried as long as I'm sitting on a BMW. My Harley stranded me twice. One of my Honda's stranded me once. Even in the worst stop and go LA traffic I've never gotten less than 48 mpg. Maybe instead of picking apart these bikes we should look at what their riders are doing to them.
I finally got got an RT!

Re: Are you worried ...
I have gotten less than 35 mpg in city driving which is about what I got with my Sporster (which never stranded me, btw). I have gotten as much as 54 mpg on the highway, which I think is exceptional. Overall, I am perfectly content with the bike milage-wise, and in every other way.daveyator wrote:Not worried as long as I'm sitting on a BMW. My Harley stranded me twice. HOWEVER, I am a little worried by the experience some people have had with their batteries. I've had the EWS and brake line taken care of, and am convinced by the evidence that DL failure is highly unlikely, but am spooked by the talk of a bad battery leaving people in the lurch. Never mind, if it hasn't failed starting into my third season, after two brutal winters with it just sitting here, not even on a charger, I should probably banish doubt from my mind. Besides, I have two ERS plans, both of which have coverage for motorcycles, and my cell phone. If I was a Chitown kind of rider I would probably invest in a TOTL battery with a record of NO failure but I'm simply not that adventurous so being out of help range is not an issue.

Re: Are you worried ...
Boy that just seems like distrubingly bad mileage. My K1200RS I had didn't even do that bad. You might be right about the batteries based on what I've read on here. Mine was a service loaner before I got it. The battery SEEMS just fine but if it was original equip its approaching 3 yrs old...hmmm.
I finally got got an RT!

Re: Are you worried ...
I seriously believe this is one of the best bikes ever built.
I'm now to 20000 km without anything but tires on the wear and tear list.
Yes. I took part in the EWS and brake line recalls.
And - believe it or not - while going moderately fast in the Black Forest and the Alps I get a constant 57 mpg (4.1 l/100km) which makes for a nice range.
Of course there is next to no city riding in that average.
Also over here used R12's are rather expensive.
So keep your bikes, relax and enjoy.
Cheers

Re: Are you worried ...
I agree with all the positive comments, but also keep a sharp eye on the problem areas reported by other riders, An insignificant % is what you call it when it's someone else stranded.
Our naked bikes are very easy to inspect for oil leaks, wheel play, etc. No paranoid feelings, nor too much Kool Aid is required. Just proper care and ride the heck out of her.
BTW, stop and go fuel use average comparisons are a waste of time. How long are you sitting at how many red lights??, etc. You are getting 0 M.P.G. for every stop and compound the variable for weight, how smooth a driver, etc., etc. It's the same as tire wear posts.
Safe travels
Bob
