I had a 135-400 for my old Nikon F body. It got lots of use at the racetrack.
I looked at the Nikon D40 and liked it. Comparing it to the E-410 though persuaded me toward the Olympus.
And those links I provide on my blog work for all brands! Cameta is an authorized dealer for Nikon and Canon as well as Oly.

Re: My Spring Wildflower Ride
I blame you, too.
I've been lusting after a SLR camera after seeing some of yours and Kristi's photo's in the past, but this thread really got me thinking. And researching, and reading, and watching ebay and craigslist for the "right" camera to come along. Well I finally won an auction for a Nikon D-40 today, along with a Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens. A demo/refurb model that fit my budget nicely. I figure I'll wait until I get some time with the camera before I worry about other lenses. Having a month of free/down time with a foot injury I also ordered a couple of books to go with the new camera and hope to have a little knowledge by the time I'm back in the saddle and ready to shoot.
I bought: The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby, and Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera by Bryan Peterson.
Any other suggestions? I'd imagine you don't need to read these type of beginner books, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
Thanks for the beautiful photo's.
BTW maduko, I did end up buying from cameta.

Add the SB400 flash to your kit. Small, light, has a wonderful bounce feature. Great for those shots of your worn clutch splines.
