Thanks much for your reply - I agree, seems rather short sided on BMW's side to paint and clear coat a part that is inevitably going to come in contact with gas - either by a malfunctioning component or just plain old gas spillage from filling up.

I've put a claim into BMW, they committed to nothing on the phone. But, I'm a bit p*ssed, I bought my bike used in June '05 from the only BMW bike dealer in South Florida, the recall came out a year earlier, and the guys at 441 Cycle didn't update the BMW ownership records (or if they did - it slipped through the system) and they never mentioned the Recall until I called saying I needed to get the bike in for service since the gas was pouring out from under the tank - the girl on the phone said - OH, BTW, you bike has been recalled for a gas leak - DUH - that's what I just said - were you not listening?

I'll report back any updates - thanks again.

Do not worry about the stains on the bike.
Fred (441 Cycle Shop) will take care of it.
If not, I will bring an Easy Off to the Holiday Park.

Thanks for offer - I can bring the Brillo - BUT that won't be necessary - BMW called today and said they will have the case repainted at their expense. So now I'm in a dilemma, if I should have the bike broken down, repainted and reassembled or live with the stain????? My gut reaction is that things are never the same after a tear down like this - but I'm not happy with the stain.

I'll have to think about this.

Hey, Phastphil. I had the stain too and BMW without hesitation offered to replace or repaint.

I went with the repaint and have been real happy with the results and they didn't have to break down the bike. The guy used a small spray gun to get into the tight areas and if there are any stains remaining, I can't see them. Maybe they can do that for you too.

It looks brand new two and one-half years later.

Thanks for the input, I'll discuss the repaint process with my dealer, as I'm not for pulling apart the bike for an ugly stain - my brother, a REAL biker (not like me who spends more time cleaning and accessorizing) said: you won't brake down from a stain, but if they tear your bike apart the chances are much greater someone will forget to put back a washer, screw or gasket leaving you stranded with a great looking bike, but no way to get home !!! Wiser words have never been said. Besides my gut instinct (as noted) is to keep the bike intact - factory assembled unless absolutely necessary to take things apart.

At least it gives me a reason to head down to 441 Cycle shop to chat and see what else I can buy for my bike!
