Speed doesn't always matter. I was once in a minivan on the backroads, not doing more than 30mph when the deer hit us - jumped out of the ditch and t-boned the van.

Thanks for posting the pictures John. Sorry about the poor quality. I wasn't taking them, not that they would have been any better if I had been.

I will try to post pics of the the gear but camera and gear are in different locations right now. There really isn't much to see except multiple puncture type tears on the front of the jacket and the elbow torn out down to the CE pad. I didn't see any significant new scuff on the helmet or tears in the Draggin jeans. I noticed a few loose threads are loose on one of the seams on the palm of a glove. I will get it all out of the trunk and inspect everything closer when I get the camera. Still no word from the dealer on the verict on the bike.

Oh yea, I forgot to reply to Breadman that it was a hacksaw. Boxer, if you think that was funny, you should have seen me start the project with a couple kitchen knives and a cleaver. The friend that took me back to the site didn't have any suitable saw. I'd never done that before and I suspected it would be tough, but I just knew I wanted some souvenir. A fellow in a pick up drove up just as I got started and offered me the saw. He ended up with the deer. He said he had seen that buck out there every night.

I'm glad you're okay too, Kevin. Just thinking about hitting ANYTHING at 65 mph doesn't sound like something you'd walk away from with just a couple of bruises. That's amazing.

How far from your bike did you end up? Are you feeling more sore now that it's been a couple of days?

I had wondered if Draggin' jeans would really hold up in a slide. I'm glad you reported on it because I had read some reports that claimed they did not really do as well as they advertise they do. But they obviously did the job for you. That's good to know especially after reading that Road Rash report that Harry posted in another thread.

I hope everything works out for you to get back on a bike soon.

I posted a ride report in great rides regards a 10 day ride I took recently.

Because of all the deer/bike crash reports I've heard recently, I did not ride before daybreak or after dark.
Except for the last day, when I did a long day just to get home.

The last 50 miles was on rural two lane (desolate actually). I was being extra cautious of deer & other wildlife. Riding 55 or 60, high beams on.

Suddenly, as I'm riding along, I see a deer not 10 feet off the side of the road, staring me right in the eye. I never saw it till I was right beside it.
And I thought I was being very observant.

Point being, the only defense we have is good gear, and don't ride after dark.

Hope the bod is getting better we do not have to look out so much for dear it's sheep and rabbits in Yorkshire they can do as much damage as a mobile hat rack never mind you can freez whats left and cover your seat for "NOWT" yorkshire speak for nothing.

Your determination to get that rack comes through in all the pictures of you hacking away at it. Good for you!

This is strange. I think we're living parallel lives. I posted a comment a few days ago ("Was It My Fault or Something Else?") where I described how I nearly high-sided in the rain. You replied that you had 'been there and done that'.

Now, you post about hitting a deer and I've also had the displeasure of doing that (a couple of years ago). Very similar scenario - a deer from out of nowhere running right to left. The deer timed it so that I hit him square behind his left front leg - absolutely no time to react. In this case, the deer was dead and my R1100R was totalled. And I broke my collarbone, but no other damage. Good gear really did help - especially my Joe Rocket jacket and overpants.

I would concur with all the other comments that riding at sunrise and dusk are not good ideas. Classically, my get-off happened at dusk.

Glad you're OK. I thought I was lucky to get away with just the collarbone (it healed quickly and completely) but it's amazing you didn't get injured at all.

Should have been going quicker.

I've killed a female in very similar circumstances on a loaned R1150RS - clouted her head with the rh cylinder (I think) and the head shot killed her stone dead instantaneously. virtually no blood on her.

I was doing about 80 and didn't come off, the bike didn't even change direction!!

Glad to hear you had a very similar experience as far as all's well that ends well goes. I too found it interesting how my thoughts were flowing as I was sliding. I've had a few other events where time abruptly starts moving in slow motion. I'll try to post shots of the gear, but they are pretty unremarkable.
