For years my kids have named me the Grinch.

But the thread hijack needs to stop..... sorry.

Is the Canon 350 XT one of the Rebel models? Is it one that can take any of the line of lenses interchangibly? (Wait, you told us about your lenses, never mind).

And when you process your pictures how much is the basic composition and how much is post processing?

That last question for TaoSports and GypsyRR and all the other real photogs on the board.

I'm not a "real photog" but I play one on TV  I was a professional in one of my previous lives, tho.

I use Photoshop Elements 4 (now in version 5) and will often do some simple post processes that are canned in the program and it works quite well. I just play around until I get a good image. I often work with RAW images which doesn't use the camera's algorithms and I usually always prefer my post processed RAW over what the camera takes and my camera takes some really fine jpgs. (Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D).

I would really like to dive into HDR (High Dynamic Range) imaging which takes a high and low range image, combines them, and produces one sweet result, especially for those late afternoon shots, sunsets etc. Some HDR shots look weird but done well, the process is invisible and the results can be stunning.

There are a lot of photos out there using this technique as well as some tutorials. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging will get you started and a google image search will give you an idea of what you can do with HDR. Takes some time, which I don't have in abundance, since I'm riding every chance I get :smt026

Hi Gypsy,
Beautiful scenery, looks so much like England! Where were they taken?
I keep looking at new cameras. I like the EOS series. Was hoping the new 30D would be a 10mp but apart from the bigger viewfinder there doesn't seem to be much difference over the 20D. I'll have to see what Santa brings!! :D
Your 350 pics look a lot sharper than any I get, do you work on them or is that how they come out?

Chris:

Thanks. The pictures were taken a few miles out of Johnson, TN. I do use the 350 right now, but am waiting for a year or so and then will step up to a better camera. I think it's the lenses that make any picture it's best. My three best lenses are in the Canon L series and I use them most of the time: 24-70 2.8; 70-200 2.8 IS, and a 400 4.0 prime. Actuallly the pictures could have been much sharper, but I was pressed for time and many of them were shot from inside the car as I slowed down to just catch a shot. A tripod would have been very helpful, but I just didn't have that much time because this was just a side trip after some business I had out that way.

Been looking at the 400D today but the lenses they come with look a bit naff. The L series are the best ones aren't they? The ones with the extra long price tags!! :) It is all about the lens tho. I'm wondering whether to go for an older body like a 20d and buy better lenses. not that 400mm one though, they run over £5K here and I'd buy another bike first!. The there's the Nikon D80 or the new Pentax K10...at this rate I'll never decide!

All of them ae good. I just already had Canon lenses so I went with Canon. I think there ae probably more options with Canon too. Don't forget to look at Sigma and Tamron lenses.

Go to FORUMS at this site and you can get some good imput on different lenses. The lens makes the difference until you get up into those really pricey DSLRs. http://www.dpreview.com/

Thanks. I read the detailed review on Dpreview today till my eyeballs glazed over. Still not at work after the hand surgery and bored to death. This is what happens you see, I sit at home and spend money online!
