Granting both are in excellent shape, would an 01 roadster be any much different from an 02? I understand both still have single sparks.

Someone may correct me, but I think all up until twin spark are the same.
I have an 01 model, so I presume 02 would be the same.
What ever model you get, you wont regret it.

Ride for fun, practice your technique, including panic braking, ride for more fun. Modify, adjust, practice, smile.

That particular deal is sweet sounding. Barring hidden and unpredictable maintenance or failure items (check for rear seal leakage at the paralever/final drive boot for instance as well as fuel line disconnect seepage) you are entering into a good bargain for a great bike.

Put an AGM battery in this season and buy a trickle charger and you won't need to take the tank off for 4 years. Educate yourself about tires and get the ones that suit your style and your roads. Buy 3 oil filters and a case of BMW 20W50 dino oil and do your own changes.

Buy it! I was just like you. I was looking for a 3500 or so bike but everything was over priced. I really wanted the R1200c but didnt want to spend the money. I had the money to pay cash for a new one but that would have been a foolish purchase for me at the time. I had never seen or heard of the R1150R till I saw the ad in the paper. It was a Saturday and I was going to look at an over priced bike when I saw the ad. When the guy roll that black beauty out I could not believe what my $5500 was going to buy me and it was 6-700 under NADA price too. I am old and fat and had to pull my leg up to get my foot on the peg but I have to have it even with sitting on my balls. An Air Hawk cushion took care of that.
The dealer only has about 2800 in the bike so see if you can get a free helment and gloves with it. But buy it, you will love it. Remember, it has thrust!

That is a pretty good price. I like ABS but the bike you mentioned is a good value. You'll find once you conquer the whole aesthetic, that cruisers don't offer any of the fun factor (other than torque) Get ready for a nimble, fun to ride, dependable machine. I've ridden BMW motorcycles for quite some time and I've never even been slightly dissapointed. I've also owned other bikes, including cruisers, but when I want to go somewhere or I want to up the stakes performance wise, a BMW is my favorite choice.
