Tony:

Thanks again for the rack. I got the 350Flow Givi, but it doesn't shut, so it will be going back Monday, and so I probably won't be able to get a replacement before my first road trip (if I get my bike back in time). I'll just have to figure out what is essential and what is not. Being stranded helped define some of that. I think this all points to my need of the R1200S. Road trip possibly cancelled if repair is delayed past Thurs a.m., Givi doesn't work, blown oil cap - Yes, an R1200S would solve my problems.

The locking cap is gone. I never did find it. That is why I had the bike picked up. I don't think I'll get another locking one. I may buy several plastic stock ones though and always keep a spare with me. I didn't have anything to plug it with and no store around where I could get the things to improvise one like Gordium7 suggested. I had thought about using a rag, but figured since I have the warranty and pick up service anyway, why chance doing anymore damage. Thank you for the offer of the rings.

Yes, please don't ever try to scare me and I will TRY to never be in a dark alley.

Kristi,

Are you certain it won't shut? With my Givi (280), you need to pull up the locking assembly and push the metal tab (above the lock) so that it hooks over the tab in the upper lid. Kinda difficult to describe but hopefully you get the idea.

 .... Okay, but that is the most stupid lock I have ever seen. And I read instructions and there were no instructions about how to get it to shut tight and lock. Only how to open it which was the easiest part. It still doesn't have a real tight seal. I'll have to be careful about what I put in there. Thanks Michael.

Kristi,

I too was wondering if you just have 'newfititis' with that Givi. Check carefully before returning it.

Also, based on this quote: "an R1200S would solve my problems" I see a future for you here! Upscaling the ride. Go!

But first, be sure the Roadster is kaput. That grey/tan Beak is a unique combo and the satisfaction it has given you is clear. You've got it your way with a Givi screen, bags, top box and wide open roads to travel. The R-S with its hexhead engine and CANBUS; 60 pound weight savings and more modern styling (very Teutonic) is sure as **** a looker and a performer, but is it a semi-tourer and street cruiser as well?

And the K-R is a great sporty ride that has two advantages over the R-S: 1) can be equipped for touring and 2) less out the door cost. And, of course, K-bike power and smoothness (but that means you have to give up on a boxer (not you Phil)).

Just checking.

I'm confused. How did a lost oil fill cap get to the point where replacing a nearly new Roadster is being considered? Kristi, I get the impression that you do a lot of things right, so I find it highly unlikely that your R1150R suffered any damage. If you want to replace the Roadster, just do it. You don't need an excuse!

As for the Givi top box: just shoot it.

Why do you feel compelled to use a locking cap ?

How are you going to avoid breaking down in certain areas ?

I'm not going to replace the Roadster. I just like that yellow RS and was trying to make an excuse to get another bike - as in stockpiling them. I'm not THAT impulsive or unwise. I like my bike........ I also like the KR, so I might need more excuses. But, no, I'm not getting rid of my RR.

I had a locking cap to keep people from doing to my bike what they did to DJ's - read his post above.

"Avoid breaking down in areas without celll coverage" was sarcasm. I do think if I do better inspections and keep reading information on this forum I'll avoid more breakdowns than if I didn't. So I intend to keep reading and learning and be more diligent in the care of my bike.

The bike is comiing back to me on Wed. Initial checks and inspection confirm what others had suspected on this board and no damage has been done to the engine. But they want to keep it a while longer to make further inspections.

It appears the mechanical guys have said what I suspected. Your engine will be OK. Speaking from the experience of a leaking valve cover gasket, a little oil can make a big mess! Glad you make it back OK.

And I am also pleased you were prepared per items 5 and 6!

I was at Blue Moon BMW in Norcross Georgia today and they had a yellow R1200S on the floor. I think it rates a one word description - - - - WOW! It had Ohlins shocks front, rear and damper (all by Ohlins) as stock. Salesman said all BMW's now come std with heated grips too. He said it was 379(???) pounds, 122 HP and the price was "Like 14-7". It's gloss black wheels hide the dirt but if they had the Mandarin yellow wheels it'd really "pop".
I sat on it and the reach to the bars wasn't that bad. Had an "ABS" switch to disable the system for track days. Undertail exhaust allows 2 fullsized bags. Too bad my retirement budget does not allow buying that bike - - - it really pushed all my buttons!!

You know, this might sound a little strange...but guns are a lot like bikes...you grow to love them, but sometimes you sell them, trade them, and regret it. I used to have a GSX-R750, and even though it beat the cxxx out of me, I still miss her. I used to have a Browning Hi-Power 9mm, and (please, please forgive me) a Browning Over/Under Citori Shotgun...sold them after nasty divorce. I have always regretted that. Guess the old saying is true...hang on to those things you love. BTW, I like your picture website...you apparently are a pretty good shot with the camera, too.

I thought I would post a follow up to the mystery of how a locking cap can come off:

Dealership said the threads were stripped from tightening it too tight. So be warned. Everything else checks out fine.

I will have to walk past the R1200S to get to my bike tonight, but temptation has fled. The RS price is too high and the RR is paid for. Commonn sense rules the day.

Kristi --

It sounds like your locking oil cap was not made by BMW; it sounds like it's an aftermarket cap (I forgot the name of the company that makes them)??? The BMW locking cap I have does not have any threads. I am wrong? Did BMW make a locking cap with threads?

My little black "Mattell" oil filler cap rests under my seat where I placed it after installing one with a special hex key opener. I could just visualize some 8 year-old opening that thing and peeing inside.

I also have the old alternator belt stored under the seat with a set of plugs that I took out last, alongside a couple of 1156 light bulbs and a headlight bulb....NO! Wait a minute! I just changed out that headlight bulb! I gotta go get another one. Be right back!...

This is the one that Darthrider used to recommend when he hung out here.

http://www.moto-techniques.com/oil_filler_kits.htm

However, at $56+, I can buy about 10 of the cheesey plastic stock BMW oil caps and inserts.

Like this, from BMW?

I did have one, but it is lost in the weeds along a road somewhere in Texas, waiting for one of those huge mowers to come along and catch it and fire it back at me next time I ride along that road!!
