Let me float another hypothesis. (I'm a political scientist--floating hypotheses is what we do).

I'd posed this same question on bmwsporttouring.com. Someone there suggested a liquid might have leaked from the right side case. I'd actually considered that when I first noticed the stain but ruled it out because the seal to the side case is pretty far out from the swing arm. But then I started thinking. A few days before I noticed the stain, I'd ridden on a business trip into Washington. During that time, about half a bottle of mouth wash leaked out of a canvas messenger bag in the right side case. Here's what might have happened: I took about a 15 minute break during the ride and was parked head up in a sharply inclined spot. Because the parking spot was inclined, I live the bike on the side stand rather than putting it on the center stand as I normally would. A few ounces of the mouthwash might have leaked on top of the arm at that point, then been blown backward once I started riding again.

But, you might ask--Did you not notice that the stain was minty? The mouthwash is the new 12 hour kind being advertised on TV. It comes in two parts--you mix them just before using. As it so happens, one part is minty. But the other--and the one that leaked during my ride--is a bit sticky, but not minty.

So this hypothesis does account for the observed information.

Believe you might have to go the CSI route. Perhaps take a small sample and have it analyzed to determine if it did indeed contain the 12-hour protection ingredient or not.

I would probably hose off (I know, I know, its washing/cleaning your bike ... but sometimes it just has to be done - for science) and see if it repeats. If not, then chalk one up to not-so-clean breath and soiled liner, otherwise, you might have a problem. That's exactly what I've done. Rode it back to Washington this week and it didn't return.

I think that's what I suggested 25 posts ago. But when dealing with someone that works in Washington (exactly what does a political scientist do, send politicians into space) sometimes the obvious isn't so obvious. At least that what it appears like lately IMHO. Sorry I couldn't resist

You can clearly see, in the 2nd photo, that the oil is on top of the torque arm, running down underneath the brake line and then dripping on the FD housing and finally to the wheel rim beneath. Check farther up! As someone mentioned earlier, it looks like a leaky shock is sending oil over in that direction and it is just flowing downhill to the lowest spot. Doesn't look like dog piss to me.

The tech at my dealer ruled that out--no sign of leakage from the brake fluid reservoir or shock.

Notwithstanding the "drool" hypothesis, anyone else noticing and impressed by all the knowledge about dog and cat urine here?

I await the answer, "they all do that."
