Asking these guys about the R12R is like asking a Russian where the best vodka is made.

If you lurk over here like I do.. you'll notice the: squishy, huggy, warm and fuzzy topics like: "I love my bike" or "Is this the greatest bike ever?" or "how do you show your mototcycle that you want to sleep with it without coming on too strong?". There was a time, before the R12R section was made (or the bike) that the R1150R section was full of that stuff too.

I have avoided a test ride on the R12R just to keep my mind off the thing. I might think about a used one down the road...but I'll probably go for a bike with liquid cooling (almost certainly Japanese )when the time comes to add a bike or replace my R1150R.

I think it's fair to say that if the R1150R fits your needs and desires for a bike, the R12R will do the same...only better. Some things the R12R will do a little better, everything else it will do much better. The biggest difference is the motor...the 12's motor is far superior. The second biggest difference is the lighter weight making it better handling. Putting the two together means significantly better acceleration. The 12 seems like a much more durable bike too, but the fleet is obviously newer and has fewer miles.

Given the choice between say Consumers Reports and a Russian - I'd trust the Russian's opinion on the best vodka..

Is the R1200R perfect? No, take a look at one from the front, look at the tank, now look at a 1980 R100RS say, at the tank from the front.
The new tank cannot compare in the looks department. Now I know that the tank has to be all big and ungainly to hide some of the things that help the bike make dang near twice as much HP as the older Airhead but IF it were "Perfect" it would have a better looking tank.
Now, the R1200R rides alot better than the R100RS in all ways. But the subject was perfect.

Not trying to be picky but

Wasn't the slogan "Ask the man who owns one" from Packard.

I know that is going way way back but I think it might be.

I hated to see all of those good brands go bye bye.

I found an old copy of Motorcycle Consumer News at a thrift store. February 2007."BMW's All-New R1200R" on the cover. They come to the conclusion that we made a very good choice.

So I guess my answer is that the r12r is even perfecter than the 1150

I don't come over here much (best not to be tempted) but like Dr. Strangelove, my '02 recently turned 50K. I have been a victim of a FD bearing failure but otherwise no reliability issues. And I still love the bike and would not hesitate to pack it up and ride cross country! Has been the best motorcycle I ever owned and still makes me smile both riding and looking at it.

That said, I have toyed with what the next bike would be. Looked at Ducs, Triumphs, other BMWs and even a couple of Japanese bikes (not seriously). One day, on a showroom floor of a BMW/Triumph dealer, surrounded by most of my choices, I had the sudden realization that the bike I would ride home that day on if given the choice - would be the black R1200R! Same bike I have now, 8 model years newer!

So while I am not shopping for a new road bike anytime soon (although a dual-sport is in my future!*), one day, I am likely to be hanging out over here instead.

*No ChiTown, I ain't riding mine like you do!
