Having shelled out for the carbon fiber hugger, I respectfully disagree--I think the carbon fiber look goes perfectly with the bike. In fact, if I ever won the lottery, I would farkle mine with all the available carbon fiber bits. But that's just me...

Ilmberger - expensive but a work of art. (like the bike really...)

Carbon-Fibre-Hugger-Fans-UNITE! (It's a movement I tell'ya.. a movement..)

To those of you who have already shelled out unecessary hard earned dollars on a carbon-fibre hugger, I respect your different opinion on this matter. I can only conclude that you are either:
1) in secret agreement that the black fibre-glass option looks better , but can't admit it now that you've bought the expensive carbon-fibre version
2) need glasses
3) only speaking out now because you realise you are not the only numpty to have wasted money and there's safety in numbers
4) you really do like carbon-fibre, and it 's only a matter of time before you've fully converted your R1200 ready to appear in the next Batman movie

Hey there, Rocket
1) I can't afford to buy cheap -a thing of beauty is a joy forever and cf will last for some time at least
2) I wear glasses all the time
3) Quality, beauty, strength and class speak for themselves -no comment required from us
4) I am a minimalist - no more carbon fibre necessary (although the integrated front guard is tempting...)

It's been raining here a lot lately, so I think I want to install a hugger. I'm not quite ready to pay for the Ilmberger carbon fiber part. It seems the only other, currently available option is the Nippy Norman hugger. Regarding the NN I read several posts mentioning cracks, so I am not sure.

Did anyone experience breaks with the NN or other severe disappointments? What's the approximate weight? Would you buy it again or do you wish you had gotten the Ilmberger?

Why settle for second best? Go carbon fiber.

I bought mine from NN 3 months ago and very happy with it so far. After a couple of thousand miles it is as good as new and I ride on a variety of roads. No chips or scratches. You just need to be a bit more careful when cleaning ie use plenty of water and a soft brush to wash away the grime (sponges can retain grit which may scratch the gloss finish).

Many R1200R owners have the NN version.

1) CF is better on a Crystal Grey bike. You'll realise this soon enough, since you have the good taste to own this rare and speldiferous colour (Hi Mark)

4) Enough CF - that one little touch tells the world I have real class. Plus - why spend $$ on CF when I could (and did) spend more on colour-coding?

My current problems is that - lights aside - I can't think whatv more farkles I could add. Is my life over?

That raises even more questions for the concerned consumer:

1. is it 'more better', i.e. will it keep my bike cleaner and last longer?
2. will it give me an excuse to take the garbage out just so I can look at it?
3. are there other secret advantages people don't like to say in public?

I have the Nippy Normans hugger and if I were to do it again, I would get the Ilmberger. The NN hugger is literally rough around the edges and the finish is hazy. It also scratches very easily. I have never seen the Ilmberger so I don't know about it's quality.

CF is indeed a sign of class, not that you need it since the bike upon which you ride is class anyway.
Also , do not despair , there is far more farkle to be added. You need look no further than Ziobato's bike...
... but I bet even he hasn't yet added gold-tipped dust caps, plated fuel cap, personalised fasteners, or painted-in the Bridgestone letters on his tyres. Then there's personalised number plates (Oh sorry, they're not allowed in US are they), personalised luggage , gold-plated handle bars ... OK , perhaps not.

I want to get a hugger and I'm not sure which way to go.
fiberglass is $100.00 less than the carbon fiber.
cf is stronger than the fiberglass.
cf is lighter
both are intune with the bike's look....
I'm leaning toward the carbon mainly because I think cf would be more durable.???
a hugger...a windshield....backpack...aux lighting and a box of cigars....that should do it.

Rocket: Personalized ("vanity") plates are alive and well in the US; my R wears HEXHED1. A little something for the squids I pass to contemplate...

I have the Illenberger - got a deal - killer deal - on it from an Ebay auction.

Given the choice - I'd go for it again. Not so much for appearance, but for function. There was a posting here not too long ago that pointed out that the Nippy Norman's hugger mounts to the top arm on the paralever suspension. As such, it doesn't move on the same axis as the wheel, and under extreme suspension excursions it can hit the tire. That to me is a fatal design flaw.

The Illenberger mounts to the rear-drive, and as such is co-axial to the rear wheel - meaning it never moves in relation to the wheel. It also mounts close enough to the tire to allow me to use the Hyperpro custom lowered shocks that still provide full suspension travel. One that hits the tire with normal suspension would likely be a real problem with these shocks (having lowered suspension - and having full travel - means the suspension WILL travel closer to the bike inner fender by the same amount as the bike is lowered. With the Illenberger - the hugger still clears the inner fender - just - with 1" lowered suspension when the suspension is fully compressed. We tested for that..)

Just my druthers.. I once had a suspension setup with a lowered shock (on a K100RT) where on large excursions the tire would hit the inner fender, instantly chirping the tire as it locked up.. that was somewhat exciting.
