When I first looked at those pins, I thought it was a pretty good idea. But thinking about it a little more, I wonder if it would be such a good idea is the case somehow came unhooked from the top and was dangling from the bike because it was being held on by a pin. I think if the thing's gonna come off, I'm pretty sure I'd rather have it come all the way off. The bike could be a real handful to steer with a heavy hunk of plastic hanging off the side.

Yeah, I thought of that too, Allan.

But pinning it across the lower mounting point (the one that keeps the bag from swinging outboard), should prevent the bag from rising at all. Or at least the front of the bag. So conceivably, if the back of the bag rose off its mounting projection, it would still be held on the bike by two points: via the front projection and the lower one where the pin is.

After pinning, I grasped the bag and pulled upward for all I'm worth and I can't get it to budge at all at the front top mounting point. The back one is still loose like it was originally, but I'm reasonably certain I won't be dumping any more expensive bags!

Sounds like the pin is a good mod for the bike.
Since your trouble I find myself slapping the bags while I ride just to make sure they're there....must look funny from the outside, like I'm trying to spur the old girl on or something.

It seems to me after looking at bags today that an effective ( simple or complex ) securing method could be made by attaching something to the hump that is to the inside of the handle
(when it is in it's secured position ) to the attaching rail that the bags hang on.

Just noticed this: Similar experience coming home from Nationals in Wyoming. I hit a fence post that came out of a pick-up right in front of me, destroyed front rim and bent rear. After a real exciting minute or two I stopped by the center divider, the pick-up driver took off. When I got to the side of the road I noticed the right bag was gone when I went back I couldn't find it. Same deal - a couple of hundred worth of tools plus a Gerbings electric jacket and controller. Also the locking latch on the left bag broke off.
Good news is I didn't go down and after a few days at BMW of Denver I was on my way.

Wheels,Tires, Bags and a new left front caliper will be picked up by the insurance company. Looks like the rest is on me, but we're still talking.
