I'm now battling with my (crappy) insurance about my surgury, they don't want to cover it. I might end up paying out of pocket. ( I'm also working out the details of self pay with the hospital, whoever makes the surgery happen first is the route I will take) At this point I just don't care, I just want to get it done so I can start the healing process and get back on my bike... Oh the joys of the American medical/insurance industry...

I did file the claim with Gieco, and hope to get my bike transported to Chicago BMW tomorrow afternoon. I don't know what will be worse, having the bike in shambles dripping oil everywhere or having it fixed and not being able to ride....


As for the boots, I'm not even positive of how my foot was broken, did the bike fall on it, or did I land on it the wrong way? not sure it just happened so fast. The boots might have made a difference, either way I'm done with the comfy, stylish, convenient BMW City Boots, and will only wear the most heavy duty boot I can find, especially when riding with a fresh injury...

Now I have an Adventure every day! An Adventure going to the toilet, an Adventure taking out the garbage, an Adventure cooking, an Adventure getting to work, everyday is an Adventure... Luckily I didn't sell my car yet and was able to trade my stick-shift car with a friend who has an automatic so driving isn't such an Adventure...

Thanks for posting the bit about the boots. It will help me to force myself to wear my Oxtar Infinity's. I went down on them in 2006 and while my ankle was sprained nothing, thankfully, got broken.

Thank you for sharing your words of wisdom with us on riding, gear and places you have ridden. It is always fun to live thru your adventures and from the number of posts here I think everyone would agree. Everytime I read something you have posted, I want to run out, open the garage door and take off on my bike.

I want to echo Don about PT. Everything they tell you to do, do it. Good luck and please keep us up to date. I bet you could write an entire adventure about taking out the trash.

So sorry to read of your off. I've always known parking lots are among the most dangerous sites, but just because of congestion, not necessarily oil. But it makes sense: cars parked and cars stopped leak oil in pools. BTW oil got me one time in San Francisco when it covered the trolley tracks in a turn I was taking a bit too fast. Happens REAL fast, doesn't it?

+4 (if I count correctly) on the PT thing. Bones heal in 6 weeks; soft tissue can take a year or more. Down the road you might also want to see a good osteopath who can manipulate the soft tissue and break up adhesions to get things more flexible. Meanwhile, enjoy the drugs

I'm sorry to hear of your insurance hassles. Our health care "system" is indeed broken. The son of a friend of mine broke his ankle playing touch football last month and the bill from Stanford's ER, covering X-ray, morphine, splint and crutches, was $8300! And that's before he sees his surgeon.

I've had to have a lawyer contact my insurance people to make them pay. Funny how, when they feel the heat, they see the light. Give 'em heck!

I admire the spirit that sees yourself as continuing to have adventures. Heal fast. Heal well. Ride strong. As I know you will.

Joe, as hard as it is just try not to dwell on the negative as it will bring more pain. If you accept things as they are and look at everything from a different perspective it will all pass easier. There must some good looking nurses around

So sorry to hear of your spill! Hope you heal quickly. I can sure identify with you. I had the very same thing happen to me just over 3 months ago. Leaving my office and pulling out and making a left turn onto the side street next to the office. Hit a very small patch of ice going 3mph. Bike slid out to my right and I went down. Broke my fibula and tibula the latter of which was a compound fracture (came out). Sucked big time. Hurt like the dickens too.

Found out too that my insurance policy did not have medical (most M/C policies do not I understand) but my health insurance picked up the tab------less a deductible of course!

Do what the Dr's tell you to do. Don't over do it. You'll pay for it later.

One question: You mentioned large quantities of oil which implies damage to the cylinder heads. Do you have cylinder protectors on your bike? I ask simply because I have the plastic BMW ones and if you have the same then I may upgrade to the metal ones.

Out of the blue a few years ago on a Sunday Drive through the Fingerlakes she says "We should have a motorcycle.". To which I responded "Why yes dear, we should." She added "But only a German one." After a death in the family and some difficult circumstances we ended up with an '02 R1150R.

After our first long trip (NY, PA, DC, VA, WV) we were going away for the weekend in the car (chance of rain), five miles from the house she says "Screw this, cars suck, lets go back and get the motorcycle." A three hour ride in the rain, temps in the 40's-50's, we get home and she says "That was fun, even the rain. When do you think we'll go on our next trip?"

MLW indeed.

Here's a quick update and some nasty pictures, of the bike not my foot.

Insurance isn't paying, I'm paying up front for the surgery - getting a discount for prepay, so much for buying a DS bike this year...
I have not had the surgery yet, it's finally scheduled for this thursday. This has been a terrible experience with the hospital and Dr's office passing the buck back and forth as to who is scheduling the procedure... very, very frustrating, after the 5 days it took for me to get an answer just for the cost.... It's a long story...
I did develop an infection and went back to the ER after talking with my Dr. on the phone. (Cellulitis??)
After getting a a couple shots of Morphine ( WOO HOO!, dam it hurt) they started an antibiotic drip, and now I'm taking pills. Plus they upgraded me to oxicodone for the pain ( WooHoo! )
The antib. is working and I'm feeling better. The thing that sucked was I had 3 shows with 4 days of work that I had to do - my design, my client, my problem. So I worked a full week last week during all of this, and of course my setup was on the 2nd and 3rd floor with no elevator.... I'm gettin' good on these crutches...
I have covered the rest of my gigs for this month so I can finally relax.
Overall I'm doing just fine, looking at this at just another challenge for me to get through, so I can get back in the saddle doing what I love to do... Though it can be challenging at times since I live alone. Since showering has become not very important maybe that's for the better...

Here's some sad photo's of my bike, the BMW valve cover guards just shattered on impact. Good if you drop it while stopped, no good for any kind of real impact. I doubt any guards would have helped mine, if it hits this hard you got other problems to deal with besides protecting the valve covers.
After seeing my bike it seems like the damage is from a higher speed incident, but it couldn't have been more than 15 mph. The force generated from the flip is crazy... I still don't understand how some of the damage happened.
I'd imagine this will be quite an expensive fix - for Geico.
BTW, I'm changing insurance starting the 5th to progressive, with $25,000 medical insurance coverage.

With this time off I've decided I'm going to make some good use of it and learn a few new things, I bought some "learn spanish" software, and a nice SLR digital camera with a few highly recommended Photography books. So when I get back to doing my thing I should have some nice photo's to share....
If things go well I should be mobile again mid-June...
