Crime rates for gun owners who have carry permits have consistently been 0.02% of all permit holders since 1988.

Where citizens are allowed to carry concealed weapons:
-Murder rates drop 8%
-Rape rates fall 5%
-Aggravated assaults drop 7%

Stopped for gas in Central California, a friend was approached by two thugs, beat to a pulp, robbed of all belongings and then they stole his motorcycle. Because he was in California, his carry gun was left at his home state.

I wish no harm to any person and dread having to use a weapon in self defense, any weapon (firearm, throwing stars, bat, knife, etc.). That being said, the safety of my family is of the up most importance to me, especially living in an area where methamphetamines are the drug of choice, and MS-13 has begun to set their roots.

As for defense against animals, I spend every moment possible in the backcountry and although seldom do bear and cats attack for no just cause, it can be very easy to find yourself between an animal and their young or their prey. A loan shot can cause rapid retreat in most of those incidents.

A frightening thread which will only reinforce a European's perceived opinions of life in the US, whether right or wrong.

I'm open to correction, but I would think that most of us on this side of the Atlantic would be appalled that anyone would even consider carrying a gun, for any reason.

There are potential 'low-lifes' everywhere - and your right to carry a gun applies equally to them. Are US citizens happy that they too are armed?

Differing opinions are always welcome and open to discussion, but before attacking my views please bear in mind that my opinions are based on living in (and having family in) the US, the UK and now mainland Europe

Please don't think that I don't appreciate many of the US's virtues, and I think I agree with you on many points... one of the reasons I left the UK was that France is still 'lagging behind' the way of life UK.

My point was that 'low lifes' are armed as well - isn't this just raising the stakes?

The majority of lows will run at the sight of an armed victim. I read a poll of inmates from a number of US prisons, and the majority of them said they would rather take on unarmed or unoccupied homes/cars. I must agree with them(if I was a low). The bad guys will always have a weapon if they choose, as they are intent on doing harm or whatever they choose to do. I prefer to make my odds better then those that prefer to live like sheep.

There's a lot to be said on this subject, but I'm not going to do it here, because this topic belongs in Patrick's Playhouse, where most people are armed, but only some with reason.

Since I no longer have my ride, I feel safe in sharing that one of the resons that I removed the airbox is that it allowed me to carry my UZI, with the short barrel, in the newfound space.

I do have to say that I never had to use it......CycleRob, made me take my seat out in BBII to photograph the set-up......

Before this is moved to the correct forum, I will add my 2 cents.

First, while I respect our foreign friends, they have to understand the an importance difference in our nation. To sum it up, many of us believe only citizens are allowed to own guns; subjects are not. It is a freedom thing. I will keep my criticisms of your country and/or cultures out of my posts and would appreciate the same respect.

Statistics can prove or disprove anything but they clearly show, in the US at least, an increase in concealed carry licensed does not increase the crime rate but has the opposite effect. From what I have read on crimes statistics in nations which have banned private ownership of guns, I do not see that it has done anything but make the streets less safe!

And finally, though licensed with reciprocity in most states I travel in, I never carry while on the bike. First off, I am usually alone or with riding buddies, with no family to protect and secondly, having a gun on the body somewhere could really hurt during a 'get-off' and leaving it unsecured on the bike is bad form.

I did move this thread from the R1150R forum as requested. Since the Original Poster is asking about carrying while riding the bike it still is a motorcycle related topic. As long as the discussion remains civil and centered around carrying a firearm while riding I don't see that it needs to be moved to Patrick's Playhouse.

If the thread turns into a pro-gun anti-gun political debate with no relevancy to motorcycles then it will need to be moved to the Playhouse.

I would think about carrying...if I had a permit. Although across state lines and what not would seem like asking for trouble. A blade will suffice for my needs be it some benign activity or self defense.

Bottoms up for the Gerber that assists at the campsite yet could stab a miscreant in the back for their trouble...

I know I'm a Newbie to this board (been a lurker for a few months now), but I'm not a newbie to firearms ownership and gun rights. My personal opinion is carrying a firearm is comparable to wearing a helmet or wearing your seatbelt. It's no guarantee of making things safer for you should you HAVE to need it, but it can help to push the odds of an "incident" more to your favor. I'm sure there are many who think this and many who feel contradictorily. That's one of the great things about this country, you're free to live where the laws suite your own political orientation. (Carry or not)

I agree with Van. Many folks in certain other countries would be astonished to hear how they are perceived in America. They might well find the applied labels unfair, uniformed and demonstrating a lack of both manners and understanding.

Suffice to say where you stand depends on where you sit.

Well, the question would be more appropriate if it had been one asking how to mount an MG-34 on an R1150R. My suggestion would be to be sure to carry a German/Austrian pistol when riding a BMW, perhaps a Glock or Walther.
