Interesting topic. I had never given it any thought. I guess I have gone both ways taking one spot or doubling up with another bike, depending on the parking.

If parking on a busy street, there are sometimes spots marked off by yellow stripes indicating a no parking space near the corners. I have always assumed this meant cars and that it was okay to park the bike there. I've never had a problem with this practice. In fact, on a busy day, there generally are bikes in the "no park" spot already. I reason that the tighter the parking is, the more appreciated it would be to NOT take up extra space.

I have doubled up in parking spaces with all manner of bikes, when the parking is difficult to find. I always make sure there is plenty of space for the other bike. Partly to be considerate. Importantly to not create a situation where my bike might inadvertently be bumped.
