Gypsy, your daughter needs a 1995 F-150 for her next car. Preferably one with at least 4 colors of paint, and 3 large dents. No one will get close enough to have any mishaps in the future.

My initial post was unclear. I'm fine. Not in the car - I only suffer as the mom of a bruised/banged up drama queen.

Gee. Out of that . . . . . and because of that mysterious communication dysfunction between men & women, I still don't get "I wasn't IN the PARKED car when it was hit, only my daughter was."

Thanks Boxer for pointing out the mass misunderstanding . . . . I don't feel so bad now for breezing over the facts after seeing the driver's airbag deployed in the pics. I'm just one of the guys.

This means when a vehicle crashes into the front of an unoccupied parked car hard enough, the $1,000 airbag goes off !! I thought there was a seat switch in the drivers seat too, but apparently not.

Jeff - It was MY car that was destroyed. She doesn't get anything, In fact, she won't be getting anything but a "No, I don't think so" next time she wants to borrow my vehicle (when I get one). She has already been hit in a Ford F350 4x4 anyway. The child has had 4 people hit her in her first year of driving. Her "smart" remark about that fact was, "Well, you said people steer where they are looking. I guess they were just looking too long." She's cute. She good be right.

Trying again with a different approach

Daughter borrowed my car. I stayed home, working.
Daughter was cruising at legal and safe speed (55 mph) on access road in the center lane.
Illegals exited highway at excessive speed
Illegals did a high speed 90 turn in front of her.
Daughter braked, but had only a split second to respond.
Crash.
Both airbags deployed from hard impact.
Seatbelt held her, airbag hit her, knees hit lower dash, ribs hit shifter.
Cars started smoking.
She was frightened and thought the car was going to catch on fire
Driver's door was jammed. She exited through passenger door unaided because of fear of fire.
She stammered across traffic to a grassy area where she collapsed in shock and pain.
Illegals exited. Two exited to unknown regions. Two others took a position on the other side of the road.
Illegals never aided her, nor checked on her, nor called police. Slime
2 "good Samaritans" recognized her when they stopped a few moments later, rendered aid, called police, kept an eye on the left over illegals, and called me.
Two police units on the scene, two ambulances, a plethora of wreckers.
She was taken to nearby hospital, x-rayed, treated, medicated, observed, then released the same day.
She is recovering well.

Sorry about the confusion. I was just trying to spare you the details and keep the 'story' short.


I have not found a new vehicle for myself yet. However, the choices are narrowing, and unfortunately becoming a little more practical with each look.

I'm sorry to hear about this and how they 'got away with it'. Hearing this makes me mad about our system. I'm glad you and you're daughter are ok. Physically, at least. Now it affects you financially and causes a big inconvenience.

I kind of figured it was your car, since most kids do not own their car. Are you just limited to the R now? And please do not let her ride that.

BUT 4 accidents in 1 year is a lot. You may want to make her wear a burka when, or if, she drives.

In her defense of the 4 hits; high school parking lots and high school gatherings are breeding grounds for accidents. Full of new drivers trying to show off. However, the advantage to being hit by a new teenage driver in a small bang-up, is that the parents don't want it on their insurance record, so they are willing to write a check for the cost of repairs. This worked to my advantage (ethically, of course).

Your bike was so beautiful, I can't believe it's gone. I hope that mexican in the Infinity gets his %&^&% stomped on.

All kidding aside, I am sorry to hear about your daughter, and the car too.
I hope the holiday was not all bad because of this. I am sure we all are giving thanks that it was not worse.

I could try to be clever (or at least as clever as a male can be) and say that hoping a parent whose child faced danger is also someone who also may not be OK.

Last year our then 16-year-old son rolled his vehicle after hydroplaning. He, and his buddy were both relatively OK. His buddy cracked a rib. John broke his nose, didn't tell us and popped it back into place. It was some time before I was OK.

But the truth is I did not read Gypsy's second post closely, the dual air bag deployment fooled me, and....based only on those photos that men focus on, I didn't realize GypsyRR was old enough to have a daughter of driving age.

But, you see, in Texas they still have that hardship law which allows kids to drive early, you know - like age 10 I think.

This almost comical misunderstanding is a perfect example of how hard it is to describe, diagnose and repair a bike problem when the full details aren't known at the start.

I mistakenly thought her daughter is like 15 or so from past phone calls and was too young to drive. Kristi saying she wasn't in the car when the accident happened still did not tell me drama queen was driving the car. Both airbags going off is the most influential fact and why I and WE ALL assumed Mom was driving. My parked car theory works if drama queen is too young to drive AND was sitting in the passenger seat (activating the passenger airbag circuit). I also thought a 50mph collision with a stationary car almost matched the damage seen. I guess I'm just too analytical when the pictorial facts are staring me in the face.

IMEO, Drama Queen needs to realize she is betting her life on it every time she gets behind the wheel and besides the insurance premiums going up, your chances the next time may not be as good.

So glad your daughter is OK and got out before any fire started. FWIW I was nicked by a group of illegals at home in Colorado, while riding my F650 a couple of years ago. I say nicked because I saw them swinging way wide, into my lane and quickly steered out of their way. Cops found their van abandoned down the street a ways, then showed me a photo line up of the driver.... an illegal who had the same drunken look on his face that is frozen in my mind since that time. The plastic bumper of their old van just caught my shifter and bracket. Never could quite figure out why my leg didn't get crushed or something.

Maybe it will make her a more defensive driver, not that she was not. But I'm glad to hear she was not injured.

I think only the newer cars have that feature. The older cars with dual airbags would deploy both airbags at the same time wether someone was sitting the passenger seat or not.

I'm very sorry to hear about your daughter's accident, but glad she is going to be ok.

I went through the same thing in August when my daughter was hit in her new Honda late at night by a redlight-running dope-dealer in a stolen SUV. It totaled her less-than-month-old Honda and left her stranded in the middle of an intersection in a bad area of town at 2am. Three jerks bolted from the SUV without even checking if she was hurt, and she would've have been had it not been for the safety features built into that car. It gave its all to save her and she came away with only a bruise on her collarbone from the seat belt and a scrach on her right foot from the accelerator. The car was totalled but, thanks to having purchased "gap" insurance, was completely covered and she got another one in three weeks. 100% of the fault was assigned to the driver of the SUV (who was never found) and her premium did not rise (Florida was a no fault state, but I don't know that that would've made any difference in this case).

Since then, I've not felt too charitable towards the dreadlock-bearing bunch.

I hope you will come out of this whole.

Thanks. I remember you telling me that story a little while ago. This Infiniti did a good job of protecting my daughter for sure. Everything could have been a lot worse. Just stumbling across the feeder road in shock could have gotten her killed as well.

I'm sure I will not get more than 4 grand for the Infiniti. I'm hoping for that It much. I re-wrote all my insurance today with my agent and got a better deal so that will take the sting out of the increase in premiums a bit.

I also went car shopping today. I intended to test drive an FJ Cruiser which I saw advertised at a lot across town (used, loaded, good price). When I arrived, the place was shut down. They had moved to a new location 30 miles away, and never updated the website. So I did what anyone of you would probably have done. I just stopped in the nearest dealership and had a look around.
Ooooops. I don't know how I went from the idea of an FJ to a Porsche 911, but let me tell you........... I never knew a car could handle like that!! I've got to get that thing out of my head and try to get my feet back on the ground, and start thinking practically again. But, I'm afraid I'm ruined! Seriously ruined. Nothing will compare to a Porsche now. I'm ruined!

I hate to say, but you need to go and take a Buick Century for a test drive, and get that 911 out of your mind.

Just a word about sports cars and insurance premiums...they command a premium premium!
Something to consider.
