But thank you for the enlightenment in an area that I still don't entirely understand;
If two adjacent stations can sell different blends, would it be possible for one to be better than the other at certain temperature?
As for octane and fuel blends, it is difficult to know which blend is best. Some motorcycle and car owners use aviation fuel with higher than necessary octane....not a good solution..others indicate they use naptha to increase octane...again, not a good idea. Use gasoline motor fuel from a retail outlet.
California likely has the cleanest blend (least emmissions) but, there are others that provide better performance in high performance engines.
Also, your location (altitude) factors into the equation. It is complex. Best to use high octane fuels (if your model calls for it) from a reliable station that turns over fuel often. Name brands are usually best (Chevron, Shell, BP, etc.). I stay away from Citgo (Chaves owns Citgo).
Use some Techron from time to time, change your oil at regular intervals and replace your fuel filter at perscribed intervals.
Also, keep your bike in good tune (TB sync, valve lash adjustment, read and clean your spark plugs). Also, if you do experinece detonation, unload the engine (back off the throttle) to eliminate the detonation. The BMW boxer engine cylinders are plated not sleeved. The Nikasil plating can be damaged by detonation or worse, pistons can overheat and ring grooves can collapse or worse yet, holes in pistons can result from unabated detonation.
Be careful out there...the fuel you use may be your enemy.
