More farkles than bike? Fess up, everybody!

Post by Caroanbill »

Oh, dear.

I looked through my little farkle spree today. At least the bike is now made (we have a VIN) so I don't feel quite so silly. the dealer has agreed to fit them during pre-delivery (but I don't think he realises how profligate I've been). My bleat is that this will not be a compromise bike - especiallly on fit and day-long ride comfort.

In the deal -
centrestand, extra tool kit, heated grips (std), ABS, ASC, EBC, low seat, panniers, rack & topcase

Already taking up space and amusing my 10month old daughter* -
Cee Bailey 16" screen (have cancelled my order for the OEM touring screen)
Headlight protector
Ilmberger CF hugger
(* while annoying her mama)

On their way already -
Wilbers front & rear shocks ... no black springs available, so I've settled for blue
Suburban Machinery lower peg kit
Kathy's Journey Designs bag set

Ordered, waiting on shipment -
Moto-techniques bar 1" riser 5/8" back (might cancel this one - no word from factory despite taking my $)

Arranged with dealer for when bike arrives -
Colour-coding panner and topcase lids
Remove tank decals
Fit s/steel mesh to oil cooler
swap Conti Sportattacks for Metzeler Z6s

On waiting list -
Sargent seat (or failing that a custom make-up in Aus)

Gettin' round to ordering -
Throttlemeister - heavy, black crinkle
Quicklock tank bag set up (Day Pack II)

Maybe, let's see whether I need 'em -
Mirror wideners
SW Motech bar risers, or maybe even Verholen (only $45AUD difference) - but the 25mm setback is probably too far for the cables
GS handprotectors

.. and, just maybe
Staintune full system

Since all that made my head spin, I also got a new lid - a nice white BMW System 5. Just as well my other riding gear is all done long ago!

You are being perfectly reasonable. We'll wait and see if they really do all of those things for you. ( Remove the decals ) but if they don't you'll have fun doing them yourself.

I'm sure there are several items you've forgotten..
  • Headlight modulator comes to mind
    Auxiliary lights
    Additional rear lighting
Kwikover (one of my favorite farkles actually) http://www.kwikover.com/
    GPS
    Bag liners
I'd have to say you've been quite conservative in your farkling..

And you may want to reconsider some of the farkle install - I find much of the fun of farkling is the installation.

Ughhhhh! This thread will become my farkle list!

For now:

Installed:
GS Handguards
BMW Cylinder Guards
Alaska Leathers Sheepskin
Bag Liners (came with it)

To do:
Barbacks
GPS
Vario Windscreen
K1200RS mirrors or wideners
and now a Kwikover (thx deilenberger!)
Do Gerbings count as farkles???

You've got a good start on farkles and I agree with Don, half the fun is putting them on yourself.

Here what I have done so far:

Installed:
- Verholen Bar Backs
- Vario Foot Pegs
- GPS
- Salamander Bar Ends
- BMW Cyl. Head Guards
- BMW LED Blinkers
- Foam Grip Covers
- K1200R Mirrors
- Alaska Leather Butt Pad
- Battery Tender
- BMW System Cases

Thrown in trash:
- Clear Alternative LED Taillight

I haven't done anything but add the cylinder guards and side cases. I don't see the need for anything else. The bike's pretty close to perfect right from the factory.

Ah...

Well - different strokes and all that.. but I can't see the fun in not farkling the bike.

Some of the items you listed, ok. Some others, I would wait to ride the bike a little to see if it's needed at this time. I'm thinking about the shocks and seat. I'm sure the new OEM shocks would last a little while, and you may like them.

But that's just me. When I bought my R1150R, I bought the system cases (I knew I would use them), the windscreen, and the rear seat rest. All items I knew I wanted from the start. Then added other things to my 'list' as I saw what others had done. kind of 'compile' all of the mods done by others and choose what I liked. My bike's pretty much the way I want it minus an Autocom, but it's rare I would actually use it that often.

Enjoy the new bike!

What about an under-seat fuse box to help work around the Can't Buss system? I use it to interface with my old school smart charger and for charging my Ipod at rallies with the ignition turned off. Also will come in handy for heated clothing and extra lights. This Centrex ( I think ) fuse box was one of the first farckles I added.

Here you go. I had a hard time finding a fuse large enough 60 amp to fuse the box.

Cool thanks.

That's the area where I keep my jumper cables...

That's the only downside to the Roadster - a lack of under-seat space to put good stuff like electrical crap.

Thanks again!
