The tire dilemma

Oh no another tire thread
Michlin's new tire Pilot road 2s aren't due in country for months and my RR needs tires now. Conti Road attacks or Michlin Pilot roads are my top choices. Any differences, I ride in the hills and twisties 90% of the time.

I put a set of the Avon Storms on my RT and they beat every other tire I've had on my bike from handling standpoint. I don't know how they will fare in the mileage wear department, but they handle like no other tire I've owned. You may want to consder these for your R as well.

If they are half as good as their predecessor's, the Azaro, they'll wear very well. I am also a fan of the Conti's, but they don't last quite as well as the Avons

Pilot Roads = longer life, better wet

Metzeler Z6. Good in the dry and wet. Long lasting. Done over 10 000miles on current set and still some life. Try to get in as many twisties as possible - including the Alps, Scottish roads and even a track day!

My friend asked about Road Pilot 2's and was told that they are months away.

The next week I had mine fitted in the same place...I don't think they really know..or want to sell old stock.

My PR2's are without a doubt the best tires that I have ever used...next best would be Pirelli Diablo's...IMO...here's a couple of pics of my new PR2's.

My experience with Avons is that they do OK until they get some miles on them, then the handling gets a little squirrelly.

I am on my 3rd set of Pirelli Stradas and they do well wet or dry and handle well right to the end. Mileage is about the same as I got from the Avons and Z6s.

Had a set of Z6 on my VFR, third set on three different bikes (VFR, R1150Rs, K1200RS). Good tires. Replaced them with Avon Storms on the VFR....AMAZING tire! What a difference. I can't wait for my Pilots to wear out on the Rockster to replace them with Storms......

I am probably going to try something different after the avons. the front tire definitely starts riding bumpy after about 70% wear.

Maybe the strada's next?

I can give a little input here. I have about 3k miles on a set of Storms on the Rockster. I really, really like the way that the tires handle, turn in and just generally feel. The only fly in the ointment is wear. The rear is just about to the wear bars already. Front however still looks like new. I may get another 500 miles from the rear. I usually get about 4.5k miles on a rear and 6-7k on a front.

I've never tried Avon tires before and from what I hear, those that have used both the Storms and the Azaros seem to prefer the Azaros. I think I may mount a rear Azaro instead of the Storm in order to use up the remaining life of the front tire.

For reference, I keep the pressures at 36psi front and 40-41psi rear. I ride solo with luggage about half of the time and do a pretty even mix of commuting and twisties. I also hit the twisties pretty agressicely. No chicken strips on the rear and about 1/4 inch on the front. By the way, the front Storm wraps around farther than any tire I have ever used. I usually get my front to the edge or very close to the edge on most tires. Not on the Storm though. Maybe I'm just not trying hard enough!

If I could get 4.5-5k out of a rear with these tires, I would use them again. Doesn't look like that will happen so Pilot Roads are next for me.

Yes; I think I will be trying Pilot Roads next change because of the dual compound construction. My Continental Road Attacks seem to be more worn than I would expect them to be after 3000 miles - I don't think they will go beyond 5000 miles.

CW. Do you ride heavily loaded most of the time? The only reason I ask is that I have a feeling that 40-41 psi is a little on the high side and will result in more central wear.

I suppose majority of my miles are loaded and riding twisties. Still Commute a lot though. One thing I failed to mention in my post above was that the rear Storm, although wearing quickly, is wearing very evenly. Just beginning to slightly square off. The tires still handle as well as the day they were mounted. Like I said, if they were getting better mileage, I would by another set. Still might.

Here's a thread about the storms on another forum I visit. Take what you will from this thread. Widely varying opinions. (Imagine that!)

Just a question of how many miles do I have left? 2.5 inch wide flat patch on rear tire. Stock original Dunlap 170.
