Smoking Paint Job?

Post by NAIAD »

After a couple of years of owning my (Quick!)silver R, I've decided it's gonna be a long time keeper. The few mistakes (that I'll admit to) in my life have mostly about parting ways with bikes I REALLY liked. Particularly the Suzuki GS1000S (known in the States as a Wes Cooley Replica) that I had the good fortune to own for a few years. My particular bike had started it's life as the race bike for a local shop...consequently had a few parts that were just a "leeetle" bit different than a stocker.

But, now that I've decided to keep the R FOREVER, think I'd like to do a bit of custom work to make it a stand out in the crowd. And remembering the very first Superbike, aka the 74-76 R90S, thought it might be interesting to use a similar paint scheme. Silver and black, sort of like the paint job on my Arai XD helmet...

So, anyone else out there done this, or even contemplated it? If so, if you have any pictures to share, I'd appreciate it.

Ciao! BJ

I haven't seen too many custom paint jobs on the R. Cyclerob's bike is painted gold. Check it out on new F800 thread.
I say if you have the time and $, go ahead and paint it.
I have some done some minor cosmetic things to my bike and have been very happy with the results.
DJ Down under had a post about trading in his R on an orange chopper-joking of course!-and I replied that he should paint his R orange. I think it would look cool and it would be unique!

They built the R....you make it your own!

I saw here, a rider that painted his Black oil cooler covers silver. Looked NICE! I am looking for the carbon fibers ones. If I can't find one used, I may just paint them a different color. 8)

There exists a picture of a guy standing beside an R1150R done up in the coveted Daytona Orange paint scheme of the R90S.

I don't have it. I can't find it. I might possibly have it on my work computer. I'll check Monday.

A year or so ago a dealership had lined up a bunch of RR's that were painted in the colors of SEC schools--oil coolers one color and tank the other. I think it was the dealer in Bentonville Ar, but can't be sure.

Anyway, they looked very cool.
If anyone has that pic, please post.

Thanks

If you do the old silver and smoke paint job of the Old R90S bikes, you must post pictures! I had already decided in the event of damage requiring repainting the tank, that is what I was going to do! That is the best color scheme BMW ever did!

Someone good with Photoshop needs to get busy showing us what that would look like!

Thanks everyone for the info and encouragement. Hadn't thought of the Photoshop idea...my son-in-law is pretty familiar with that program. Maybe I'll see what he can come up with...

If I do move ahead with the idea will probably wait until the rainy season here in the Seattle region. Wouldn't want to miss out on riding opportunities on the 4 or 5 days of sunshine we get annually!

And if I do follow through I'll certainly post some pictures. Also, I had thought a bit about the Daytona Orange paint scheme, which I do like, but it's a bit over the top for me. Spent too many years riding around in bright red / conspicuous fire trucks, so prefer a more "stealthy" approach now I suppose! 8)

A talented man - the black R1200ST looks great (boy, do they do some duff standard schemes for that bike...) but I love the matt black Rockster:

Whoa!

Thanks Hendrikus...some truly amazing paint jobs. Some of those make my ideas seem VERY tame! Maybe Daytona Orange isn't so over the top as I thought!

I do like some of the painted wheels...though I'm thinking about just having my stock wheels polished out. Saw a set on an RT last summer in Seattle that I thought looked pretty cool.

This isn't exactly what you're looking to do color wise, nor is it completely faithful to the original scheme, but I hope this helps.

Very interested in this topic as I have been thinking the same thing for a while. Some great ideas here. this has just spurred me into action. My bike goes in for its service next monday and I got a decent quote for a paint job. I am toying with the idea of mandarin, possibly with a white stripe about 5cm down the middle of the tank. Open to any other suggestions.

Do they do this at the BMW dealership, or somewhere else?

There are some TRULY amazing paint jobs out there, eh what!

DSKYZD, thanks for finding the Daytona Orange, you're right, it's not very faithful to the original, but it still looks pretty sharp. Good digging!

Hendrikus, and thanks to you too, some excellent paint jobs over there. Another I recall (and had saved a photo, but lost it) was also in Holland. Pictures were taken on a dealership floor, bike was sort of a orange/gold with cream color two-tone, nice pin-striping and a few bits of chrome really set it off.

DJ, and thanks to you, I now see another scheme I might consider. The white with blue tank graphics looks really nice. Think I may have seen that somewhere on the web before. It sort of evokes my memories of the the GS1000S I had a few years back. Sort of heresy I suppose, but I did like that paint scheme of white/blue/ black pinstripes. But on the other hand, do recall that some of the R100RS's had a white, blue, red stripe, so guess something like that might keep it in the family!

Oy vay! So many choices!

Thanks for everyone's interest...it's getting me sort of jazzed up about this whole idea. Gotta take a few digiphotos of the Quicksilver and start playing around with photo shop...SOON.
