anyone dumped the can yet?

I've been running my '02 R1150R without the exhaust can for 4 years now. It helps the breathing and makes a great sound. Wondering if anyone has done the same thing to their R1200R?

Nope. Not intending to.. that sort of thing is way too popular with the chrome and fringe 1% (actually about 50%ers) in the US. There is a saying around our local BMW club "Loud pipes=small penis"

IMHO more noise isn't what I want. Aside from pissing people off - it is fatiguing on a long ride for the rider and anyone riding with them. Without back to back dyno charts I really doubt if any useable HP is freed up by removing the exhaust - BMW's awfully good at tuning these things (and if you visit my personal website - there are lots of dyno charts relating to intakes and exhausts - http://www.eilenberger.net) and they don't tend to leave HP laying on the table.

The engine is only as good an airpump as the most restrictive point - and on almost every BMW engine - that's the valves, not a lot can be done beyond what BMW has done. If you check the R1200S racing bikes - they do run an exhaust canister. I talked with the guys who raced the R1200S at Dayona - and they said the gains they saw were made iwth intake/porting modifications..

Oddly enough (with regard to the 1150) removing the can did nothing to increase the level of noise coming out of the CAT'..... HONEST, no louder, it just added a little more character by having changed the sound (and reduced the overall weight, and allowed a full size case, and gave yer bike that 'personal' touch).

The BEST results I got (and I ran various systems/combinations), was when I added a straight through lite weight carbon fiber can (no packing) onto the end of my CAT'. I swear to God the bike actually had improved low-end AND my highest top speed was attained with that combination.

But I have no idea how the new R1200 systems are though,
I'd love to find out someday by owning one......

You are right - I did ask ...... I asked "who had dumped their can". Given that you haven't I guess you could have replied "Not me" or simply ignored the post.

We have a saying down here that guys who mess around with dynos rather than getting out and riding their bikes are complete tossers but of course "I'm not implying anything"......

Posted the above quote and a picture of you and your bike on the NJMC (Ocean County,NJ Cruiser Club (Read - Harleys with loud pipes) site. Took the picture at Square Root Rally, it shows your plate number as I didn't want them to confuse your Black R1200R with mine.

I had Sgt Schultz cos the R1150R reminds me of a Wermacht helmet - ugly but effective...

Now what was the name of that Gestapo colonel who used to always say "shut up, Klink, and listen!!"

Yes, my /5 sounds just like a motorcycle. I've had a few comments about that, but the best was from an un-named Harley Rider that pulled up next to me at a light and said "Man that thing is fxxxin loud". I was impressed, but I did repack the muffler soon after.
Next best was long time Beemer rider and an old friend that I have ridden thousands of miles with , told me I was an embarrsement to all BMW riders. I felt pretty good about that too.

Following this thread to see what others are doing about the exhaust. That smokestack muffler will be the next thing to go - after the seat. I don't expect any horsepower gain but I can't enjoy a bike that sounds like a Timex watch going down the road.
