Engine chokes up at downshift.

Post by stratus17 »

I have my R1150R since end January and I have put 5000km on it . I have been very satisified with my ride but since the beginning I have one problem. Many times, when I downshift, at low speed, the motor choke up and stopped. The rear wheel would be blocked for one or two seconds. Often the bike momentum if sufficient to restart the motor but sometimes I need to pull the clutch and push the start button.

This happens mostly when I need to slow down quickly, at an highway exit or when entering a town, ...

Is there anything I need to check ? Thanks for your advices.

Are you taking the RPM's below 1,000? I know this may sound like a silly question, But I have not heard of your bike's symptom.

with a fuel injected engine that has a hard time meeting most emission standards, BMW tries to cut consumption when ever possible.

One area is on idle and when you cut the throttle while downshifting. This is why the R engine has such great engine braking, there is almost no fuel delivery on when you cut the throttle.

if the bike is out of tune (it should idle between 1000 and 1100rpm) this could be a problem.

otherwise it could be the O2 sensor, the bosch computer, the fuel pump, or the tps sensors in either throttle body.

If the bike is in tune (valves and TB balanced), it could be anything else that is cutting fuel to the engine.

I'd had that problem since new (2 1/2 yrs and 50,000km later), along with surging I thought that it was just the way it was!!

My symptoms were:
1) surging at 3000rpm with light throttle load.(I had minimised it over the years)
2) engine stall during rapid braking (particularly around town).
3) engine shuddered when entering the power band range approx 5000rpm +

With help of a link I followed from this forum, I discovered I was missing a vital part of the tune up process. When balancing the throttles I neglected to balance the cables, in effect, as I opened the thottle from a balanced idle, one cylinder was getting more fuel that the other, because one cable was tighter than the other, hence a very unbalanced motor that often stalled under heavey braking etc.

Now it's smooooth, no surge, no stall and no shudder, just go!

IT'S LIKE A BRAND NEW BIKE AFTER RIDING IT FOR 2 YEARS.

Surging around 3000 rpm

Post by Daryl_stamp »

I've noticed 'surging' or what feels like very slight cut-outs, so slight that I just thought is was a non-smooth road. I've never had it stall, ever, (well, once when I grace-lessly tried to 'be-cool') and I practice emergency stopping a lot (60 mph - to almost dead stop in as short a distance as possible). I spoke to the service manager @ CRM and he thought it might be TB sync or similar; so I scheduled a routine18K service. I'll report on any differences I feel in smoothness.

baltm604 is right about theRPM's. They drop REALLY fast when you let off the throttle. You really have to be careful and give a little gas right before you let out the clutch to rev up the RPM's a little.

My R1100R dies sometimes when down shifting, when exiting the x-way, as well. It is in tune with the TB ballanced, runs grait w/o surg other wise. My thought on the problem is that perhaps there is low voltage when the revs drop on down shifting (weak batt. or alternator or both ?).May be I should put it on the charger at night to see if it make a differance.

May 2 cents
