Sunday Accident

Post by davevagts »

:( Well my friend just got a new used bike yesterday. He wanted me to take it out and see how I like it. Well when I was out, I told him to do the same with mine. I get back to about 20 people standing around my bike. Somehow when he was taking off, it kicked out from underhim, and slamed right into a parked car. The tire went flat, the brake light won't turn off and the rim has a little ding...I'm so depressed...He said he's going to pay for it all, but I don't think he knows how much it will acually be...o-well, I just needed to vent...Thanks Guys! :(

Dave,
The front wheel alone is $725, unless you can send it off to have it straightened out. I've heard of that.

Like my friend said when someone asked him if they could take his bike for a ride he replied, I would let you ride my wife before I would let you ride my bike!

Sorry to hear about the damage Dave. Hopefully your pal (if he's still your pal) is ok and I'm sure the bike will be repaired good as new. Be thankful it wasn't worse.

Best excuse not to lend anyone your bike is that the insurance only covers the named insured (The bike owner !)

'nuff said !

Things I never lend to anybody:

1. My wife
2. My tools
3. My climbing gear
5. My motorcycle

That tale is also why I have rarely ridden other guys bikes.

Now I know I would have it repaired.... but, oh that sick feeling when you see your bike banged up.... I'd hate to see that look on the face of someone I knew well enough to ride their bike.

Dave:

Did you send it to Atlanta BMW, or Blue Moon?

I don't know the folks at ABMW, but the service department at Blue Moon is first-rate.

Best of luck with your fix. I look forward to seeing you on the road. I'm on the black R1200R, with the white pinstripe.

Dave - glad to hear your friend will pay for the damage he caused.

With the exception of a few guys on this board such as Phil, Cam, Brian, and Vann, there is only one other buddy I would let ride my bike. And that's Erik - a friend I've known for 20 years who has been riding for about the same length of time. Otherwise, there is no way I would let anyone ride my motorcycles except mechanics at the dealerships I get my bikes serviced.

I'd let friends ride my bike subject to some conditions. They need experience & an endorsement, it ain't a learner's bike. They also need to have the wherewithall to be able to buy it outright without undo harm to their financial well being. Depending on the type of bike they were used to riding, they might also get some instructions.

The bike is, afterall, a thing, & I like to share things. Not in the same catagory as the wife, IMO.

Now you want to see a real screwup regarding somebody else riding your bike, read this:

BTW, you should keep the old rim & see about having it straightened & sell it on ebay & give your buddy back some $$, if he is standup about the whole thing & you are so inclined.

Glad your friend was not hurt.

Hmmm... looks like the dealer is trying to make a bit on this.

VOR (Vehicle Off Road) AKA - Fast Shipping - from BMW-NA isn't 10% of the retail cost of the item AFAIK.

Shop supplies? What - compressed air? Hand-cleaner? $20 worth?

Mount and balance $72? A full hour of shop time?

Seems a tad excessive.. but perhaps your dealer has different policies than mine.
