Arrival and Departure Routes Worth a Ride:
From Ohio and West --
Parkersburg Turnpike plus. From Marietta/Parkersburg area find and follow WV 47 up the Little Kanawha (kuh - NAH) River to US 33 East to Weston, then US 19 South and WV 15 East to US 219 South to Marlinton.
From Pennsylvania and North -- Any of the following US routes South: 19, 119, 219, 220 AND any of the following US routes East or West: 33, 50, 250; then eventually US 219 South to Marlinton.
An alternative from Morgantown, WV -- WV 7, 72 to Parsons and then US219.
OR WV 26 from the border of PA/MD/WV to WV72 and so on.
From South Carolina, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina -- US 11, 19, 52, 221 north into SW Virginia, then US 219 from Narrows area.
OR WV 16 through the Coal fields to WV 39 into Marlinton.
From Mid-Atlantic -- you already know what to do.
Breakfast each morning: $5 plus tax = $5.30 per person Payable to Innkeeper at arrival.
(At the Old Clark Inn/Dirt Bean the breakfast part of the B&B is not in force for our weekend unless we all (100%), 22/22, etc sign on. Cost will be $5 per person per day (Saturday and/or Sunday).)

I'm going to sit down with Alex next week and plan our arrival/departure routes. At the same time I'll try to come up with a couple dayride suggestions. Maybe a few rides:
a northern route that goes by Seneca Rocks and Mount Storm
a western wide that involves rt16
a southern ride that includes New River Gorge
an eastern ride into central Virginia, maybe to Camfarm?

The number one ride I recommend is this:
South on US 219 to US 60 in Lewisburg (40 miles); US 60 west.
US 60 is a forgotten road for the most part, but is designated as a National Scenic Highway - The Midland Trail. From Lewisburg it winds through hilly farm country for many miles before entering the drainage areas of the Greenbrier, New, Gauley River system and climbing into the Highlands near Fayetteville, WV. Then twisty road down to Ansted and Gauley Bridge. (65 miles)
At Gauley Bridge, take WV 39 North/East to Cranberry Glades and the southern entry to the Highlands Scenic Highway (passing through Summersville and Richwood, WV) (75-80 miles)
Take Highlands Scenic Highway back around to US 219 and ride several short miles down the mountain to Marlinton. (30 miles)
200+ miles day trip.
Ignore the parts where the router sends you on I64 and stick with US 60.

I have a Pocahontas County brochure for motorcycle visitors that includes routes for several rides in the area. Nelson has them at the Inn also!
The good thing about that part of the country is you would have to work at it to find a bad ride.

For Saturday, May 19, the worst ride I can imagine is this:
From Marlinton take US219 North to WV66 (20 miles)
Take WV 66 to Snowshoe Resort (10 miles) Visit the resort with all the other tourists.
Return to WV66 (10 miles) and continue East to Cass (Scenic Railroad) (10 miles) Visit Cass Scenic Railroad with all the other toursits and school trips.
Return to WV 66 and escape East;then North on WV28 to Green Bank to see the telescope with all the other tourists, school trips, and local ner'-do-wells. (10 miles)
Follow WV 28/92 south to the split (10 miles) and stop at the state's single worst gas station, rest room, convenience store, if it is open.
If you have a typical visit, it is closed because of a death in the family, community, county, or state OR the plumbing is off, the septic is fouled, or the proprietor is duck hunting. If you are really lucky, the single multi-toothed local denizen on his SuzYamDaKaw screamer 600 will stop to bond with the first fellow bikers he has seen in years (and tell you about the last time he saw any - which was us).
Take either VA 28 or VA 92 South. It doesn't matter, they both go to the same town. They both suck. (15 miles) Look for gas, food, drinks, rest rooms, typography, clear streams, anything to take your mind off the disasterous ride you are on.
Follow WV 39 West to Marlinton. (10 miles) Thank God you are safely back. Hang out at Old Clark Inn and try to make your story sound better than your ride.
100 miles but it seems longer.

Believe me Brian, I've been trying like crazy to bring along a couple of "real" whippersnappers from Georgia just so you would feel...well...a little more "geezer-like".
But alas, it looks like I'll be coming from Georgia by myself.

Phil, thanks for effort but it's OK. I've always hung around older people. They're always giving out good advice and sharing hard learned lessons. I just try to keep my mouth shut and listen.
