Replacing fuel filter

My 2004 has 25k and I want to switch out the fuel filter. Can I attempt this without a haynes manual? I know there's alot of info here and on other websites, would you say there is enough info or should I spring for the 45 dollars and buy the manual? Also, if I buy via mail which dealer would you recomend?

You can do it without the manual. Its pretty easy to do, except for the fanagling the whole contraption out of and back into the hole which appears too small. And the manual doesn't address that at all.

At 25K I wouldn't worry about replacing the rubber o-ring, unless you just want to or it is nicked or something. Up to you. It will require also removing and replacing a couple of little fuel injector type hose clamps which are a PITA. OH! And be very, very careful tightening the nuts back down when you get the assembly back in the tank.. They have to be done evenly and not real tight. The torque is 5Nm on those little babies. The o-ring does the work.

I just noticed I posted a similar message last season. I'm feeling better about doing it, i think my main concern is getting the whold assembly out and back into the tank. any suggestions to this, i guess I should take it slow and remember what goes out must fit back in. I'm concerned about with all that finessing i may make some metal to metal contact and cause a spark and ignite residual fuel. pardon my paranoia just don't want to burn the harage down.

If it helps, here's a photo I posted earlier when I did my fuel filter replacement.

It looks impossible to get back in, but with some tilting and turning the entire assembly, you'll get it in.

A very timely post from my perspective: I'm actually considering modifying things to use an external filter per the directions on the IBMWR.
Seems like this would only be little extra, non-recurring work that will make future filter changes much easier.

Anyone actually done this to their R? The directions on the IBMWR are for an S and RT, but everything looks pretty similar to the Roadster.
