I can't resist anylonger

Post by Acpantera »

Well I think I have to get a new R12R. After all the effort I put into talking my self out of it(too costly, not as good look'n as the 1150), I still want it. I even considered a sport tourer like the FJR and the new Concourse had my attention too. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty I have to have the roadster. I'm going to trade my R1150R that I put 36k happy miles on. I do have a few questions............where is the battery? the 1150 batt was a PITA to replace.......Is an oil cooler screen available for it?(seems like it needs some protection) ........ how is the passenger comfort compared to the R1150R?.......and is the vibration less noticeable, like in the handle bars and mirrors? Thanks

You'll love the R1200R. It's a very different machine from the 1150. (FWIW, I think my granite gray metallic bike's very good looking. ) The battery is right under the seat. I haven't pulled mine, but it doesn't look difficult. I've got a few tiny dings on my oil cooler, but it's no big deal. I know someone sells a screen for the GS oil cooler, so I would expect one for the R soon.

Oil cooler

Post by thenok »

I did also see the oil cooler as a problem at first, but look at all the japs and ducatis, most of them have the oil and water cooler just behind the weel. If they last, my RR will also!!

I really wanted an R1200S. I wanted it for the longest time.
Even before it was available I knew everything from the pelican bord.
When my R1150R broke, I took my checkook out and bought an R.
Weird; I just boght it ! !
You will be very pleasantly surprized.
I got the remus headers and pipes.
I got me one hell of a ride!!!

I rode the R1200R a couple of weeks ago, and while it is a damn good bike, I cant justify the extra expense.
Out here, a new R will cost you $19,000 plus extras. I would be lucky to get $9,000 for my 1150R which has about $4,000 worth of extras, which I would then have to buy for the 1200R.
IMHO, not that good of a bike to outlay that sort of money for, considering the enjoyment, and life left in my 1150R(21,000ks only)
If I change bikes, it will be a R1200GS. For me, worth the extra above the R.

In Norway I had to pay $31450 for my new R1200R. Half of it is tax  . So at the prices that you have to pay, just buy it :x

Well, at least $18,500 plus, plus--I think you are underestimating the trade-in value of your R--BMW dealer in Perth offered me $12,500 for my Rockster, mint with less than 20,000km on a s/h 1200ST, and Rock's resale is a lot less than 1150R's. That was without any haggling. As for the extra's well, you are better of selling them separately--you will always take a loss on "extra's", dealers want stock bikes.

My wife actually wants me to buy a 1200R....
I love 1200GS's after a couple of intensive weeks on one, but it's another $3,000 over the R

I would sell my extras seperate for sure, but the dealer in Adelaide
said mine would retail for $11-11,500, and they want $2,000 in the deal, so $9-9,500 is the trade value. Could try private.
The $4,000 for extras relates to having to spec the new R the same as the old one.
Anyway, I just renovated the bathroom, so no money left.

What are the odds of getting luggage tossed in with the deal if I pay list for the bike?.....Anyone care to talk about passenger comfort.....better or worse than the R1150R?

But just HOW is it a very different machine? Can you be more specific? Are there any areas where the 50R is better (excluding appearance)?

More power, more torque, better transmission, much improved brakes.

I'd recommend going over to get over to Cliff's and test-riding one.

FWIW, I think it looks better than the 1150. I don't miss the beak.

here is a quote from bmwmotos:
"My old R1150R with ohlins compared to my new R1200R with
Remus can and headers is like a VW Passat 1600 Diesel with the familly
and luggage on board compared to a Golf GTi turbo with one person"
I thought that was funny, I also think it is pretty accurate.....

I believe my 1150R is nearly as quick as a new 1200R. (acceleration)
Mine has full Remus system, chip, and O2 sensor disconnected, and I have ridden the 1200R, and not that much more go than my R.
Others will no doubt debate this claim, but these are my thoughts
after riding both.
I wont be trading. :D

johno, a bike set up such as yours has perhaps 80 RWHP while a stock R1200R has appx 100RWHP in addition to being much lighter, much better tranny, etc. In the real world, no contest at all.

It's funny how a loud pipe can give you the experience off going fast(I had a very loud R1100S but this didn't come close to the accelaration of the R1200R) :D Seriously though when your still pleased with your R1150R there's absolutely no need to change but both accelaration and braking performance are mutch improved. I went from the R1100S to the R1200R for ergonomic reasons mainly, mutch nicer riding position at legal speeds(witch are the speeds I'm being held to more and more here in the Netherlands), less weight on the shoulders and wrists. I never felt the R1100S was slow but now I've got the R1200R I think this is mutch quicker low down and will probably will be even quicker with a full system.

As I stated Dean, this is my opinion, seat of the pants feel, not some loud pipe wank.
Yes, brakes feel better, bike is lighter, but the way I ride, I dont see any benefit in out laying $10-12,000 to upgrade for those 2 things.
Dont get me wrong, I think it is a great bike, and I enjoyed riding it, but not enough to trade.
I use the torque of mine to ride, not heaps of revs, so I am happy the way mine is. I also have bar risers, so no wrist problems.
Were I live, and concidering I should never have sold my R1150GS, I would probably buy a 1200GS next.

The hexhead motor is deceptively quick, smoother and with a definite kick up higher that is missing from the oilheads. The Rockster always feels like a blunt instrument , effective but dull, after a ride on a hexhead.

What are your thoughts on your 1200ST now , Dean? must be getting up around the million miles by now... :D
