Crash bars

Can anyone suggest good crash bars and where to get them? Also I though of the silver as oppose to chrome or black but I am not sure about the looks (Black 02’ R1150r). Lastly how much wideer will the bike be with the crash bars? Any help is appreciated.

Excellent question.
I was looking for an Engine Protection Bars my self.
I found “Wunderlich”. Very well made (6 mounting points) and sold by http://www.bmwsantacruz.com
Chrome #8160106 $369.95 :shock:

Those Bars look like a good place the stretch your legs on the long trips
My idea was to attach some cheap highway pegs to the bars instead of spending money on the expensive Elf pegs. I will opt for the Chrome ones, since I already have Touring Handle Bars in Chrome. In addition, Wunderlich Bars have special mounting points for Comet FF 100 Light Kit in combinations of High Beam and Fog #8200039 $159.95
I do not know anything about Comet FF 100 Light Kit and do not think I have any use for them. I did not pull the trigger yet because my gate for the bike is very narrow. Hope someone will give us the measurements on those Bars.

I just installed Wunderlich black bars a couple of weeks ago (picked them up from BMW of Santa Cruz). So far I'm really happy with the look and fit. There are mounting points for auxillary lights, which is a big plus as well. The look of the bars mimics the lines of the bike really well and don't look as "unkempt" as some of the other bars I've seen.

Once you install lights on your crash bar, you give up the best place to rest your feet when you need to stretch out your legs.

Hepco Becker is a good product and SW-MOTECH Crashbars look good too, but I already set my mind on Wunderlich.
ASQtec is correct.
Once you install lights on your crash bar, you give up the best place to rest your feet when you need to stretch out your legs.
In all the years of riding my R, I do not remember the case where I was in need of extra "LIGHTS"

The aux lights really come in handy when you're out in the middle of nowhere. I ride down to Joshua Tree in Southern California frequently, and when you are out tearing around in the park at night, it is pitch black - no street light, starlight, or sometimes even moonlight. It's useful to throw light a little further and wider than than the headlight, epecially when you have mice, rabbits and snakes darting out in front of you randomly.

I also found a new use for them on my last ride...visibility. Slow drivers let you get around them pretty quickly when those PIAAs are blazing behind them.

My use of fogs lights is to make my bike more visible to oncoming traffic. I try to limit my after dark riding since my night vision isn't very good.

I agree, auxiliary lights are indispensable for many reasons. My opinion is that they make you more visible to the person about to make a left turn in front of you.

There are many different ways to mount them. Here's my current favorite.

Go to napa, I purchased implement lights,(like for tractors), I then purchased some aircraft landing lights that fit the implement housings. The housings are rubber and the lamps fit perfectly. Sealed beam, 100,000 cp and 100 watts. I used a 30 amp relay and tied it to the highbeam switch, with a switch and fuse inline. I can't figure out how to post pictures. The aviation type lights are usually sealed beam with a thicker glass face than normal, plus the face is clear. They are often 'illegal' to fit due to the clear (non-directional) face, but they are very good lights for country riding or driving.

Most lights have some sort of patterning in the glass face. These don't. I've had a set on my cars since the 70's - never busted a lens and only replaced one sealed beam when it blew in about 1980! I've set them aside for the R, but haven't got around to fitting them yet.

branson, do you have any trouble with those bars grounding while leaned in a turn? They look to hang pretty low.
