Dead Battery :evil:

So I started a new job and had to move and really have not had time to ride the last time i got on the ole Rock was last part of NOV. I went to start it up and the light would come on but would not crank on!!
I don't have a trickle charger and don't want to have to buy a new battery.

I know I have read about jump starting the bike in this site before but I can't seen to find any topics.

Any of you guys have any

Ideas??

It should roll start ok...do you know how to do that...or are you asking about using jumper leads from a car battery?

if you're jumping from car, do NOT have the car switched on.

the charging circuits on cars are a LOT more powerful than they are on most bikes and you could easily overload your bike's electrics.

(admittedly not so much of a problem with BMs, perhaps, but I wouldn't take the chance.)

Well I was asking about all that!! If I roll start do I have to have the bike in Gear and POP the Clutch like I do in my car or is there a DIFF.Way?
And Riceburner Is it safe to use a car Battery ??? And if so is there and easier way to get to the battery with out moving the gas tank??

Your 04 should have two lugs on the left side by the power outlet, a positive lug under a small black cap (should have a + sign on it) by the power port / starter and a negative lug on the left cylinder in the area of the intake tube. Just connect the jumper cables to those points and no need to remove the fuel tank to get at the battery.

I've roll started mine a few times just for the fun of it...here's what I do.

Second gear..third if you have a hill..clutch in..once up to speed..turn the key on..stand on the pegs..drop your arse on the seat and drop the clutch.

Timing is important or you'll just lock the rear wheel and skid to a stop..once it fires pull the clutch and blip the throttle...it works for me.

it's perfectly safe to use a car battery as long as the car isn't running. they're the same voltage.

check the rest of the site - you can find terminals either already accessible (see psot above), or take the cover off the starter motor and use the direct link to the battery (upper terminal if memory serves) for your positive hook-up, and an-other bolt that's directly attached to the frame/engine as negative.

I recently took my Rock for an annual service... The guys at BlueBell (my local dealership) said that the starter motor sounded a little 'lazy...', and they'd like to replace it under warranty - AUB warranty that came with the bike. I was most impressed by this !! Well done Blue Bell BMW Crewe (Cheshire, England)

Getting to the point tho', we were talking about batteries as I'd wondered if the lazy or laboured starting was due to a dodgy battery. I mentioned that I'd now got it connected upto a battery conditioner, optimate to be precise.

The service rep. said that he'd experienced these things causing problems with batteries, specifically loosing electrolytes... I've no idea if this is true or if anyone else has experienced the same thing. I'd always thought that having a conditioner should extend the life of the battery.

Maybe he had a dodgy charger?? What d'ya Riceburner? The mechanical force seems strong with you

the only issue I can see with running an Optimate on it on a permanent basis is that charging DOES cause the electrolyte to "bubble" (watch a fresh battery under charge one time). Obviously you're going to be losing "some" of that liquid to gas, of which "some" will go to atmosphere via the breather tube, and you've lost it.

If it were me, I'd only use the Optimate (and I've got two myself) for periods under 18-24 hours at a time (and even then you should only need to do it for that long if the battery is truly f*cked). A 4 hour charge (ie an evening) should give you enough to start the bike the next morning, and any ride over 30 minutes will get the charge back to optimal, if your charging circuit is ok.

Tbh though - he was probably lining you up to buy the BMW charger....

Dude, you live in a cold weather state; buy the charger...you can use it on both your BMW's, just make sure you have the right connectors and you're good to go.

my Internet just came on after 4 days of being down due to a wind storm I 'll have to buy a charger cause I know that my car can also use a charge ! but it's nice to know that I can jump the bike from the car!!!

I couldnt find these this morning.
Mine is an 04, and has a powerlet on the starter cover.
Where exactly are these positive /negative lugs?

If you have a powerlet mounted on the starter cover you can charge the battery using that. Just get the right plug, like this (PPL-001):

yes yes. I know you can charge the battery using the powerlet.
I do that already. However, I wanted to see where there are these lugs, for emergency jump start purposes.

I think there's a thread below, called "Kick Starting" that has a picture of where you can attach jump-starter cables. Have you familiarized yourself with the "search" function on this board?

Well I purchased a Charger/ Tender from My local BMW dealership. It's called "Chargex 12v Mini" By Kisan Technologies I thought I would share because I thought it was really cool. It has 3 ways of hooking it to your bike once you plugged it to your wall.
1st It has the connectors to hook up to your battery terminals, Too much work!

2nd you can use alligator clips, Again too much work.

and 3rd but not least if you have Gerbing heated clothing and you have it hard wired it to your battery you can just plug this tender right to the Gerbing Dc plug, the same plug you use when plugging your clothing in and your Done!!!

The best part of this is the price I paid only $29.99 vs the other two tender/chargers that they had there... Both BMW tenders one for $80 and the other one for $119.00.
